Let’s face it, groceries aren’t exactly cheap right now, so making the most of our meals is a must. But is washing and reusing pasta going a step too far?

A US-based mum has shared her ‘waste not, want not’ tip for repurposing her son’s leftover pasta, and it’s left the internet divided.

“OK I need you guys to settle a debate for me,” she explains at the start of her TikTok video. She explains that she wanted a different pasta dish to the one her son had for his lunch. Given that he didn’t touch his pasta, she decided to reuse it.

“I decided to save the pasta by rinsing off the sauce and then creating the pasta I wanted to have.”

The mum is seen rinsing the pasta off in a colander in the sink, removing most of the sauce. Then reusing it to make her own pasta dish.

“But my husband thinks that it’s really weird that I did this. Was looking at me like I was crazy while I was rinsing off this pasta. So I gotta know is it weird or is it a good way to reduce food waste?”

  • I really dont think that pasta is that expensive but I guess if you are on the bones of your butt then go ahead.
This is not something that I would be comfortable doing thats for sure and I certainly wouldnt rinse off pasta and serve it up to anyone else.

  • This is certainly something I never have an issue with as my son will eat as much as he can, then he saves the rest for his lunch the next day or he’ll add extra ingredients and have it the following night. I don’t eat much pasta and I can’t see myself rinsing off sauce from a family members leftover pasta to use in another dish for others. We all have our own ideas of what we will and won’t do though

  • I have done this. I wouldn’t do it for a tiny bit of leftovers, but if/when my son didn’t touch the meal at all (put put tomato sauce on it, yuck), I simply washed the sauce off and added something else.

  • This is so gross! First of all if you are going to wash and reuse, you would also need to reheat otherwise you’re going to have cold pasta. That would then make the pasta overcooked. Pasta should realistically be al dente. Other than that, we frown upon restaurants doing this sort of thing, so why should we do it in our own home? If you want to be savvy, freeze an entire meal of leftovers and make sure you don’t serve your kids too much that they are not going to eat it all.

  • This is a very savvy way to save waste. I personally would never consider doing this but I guess each to their own and if you are ok doing this then it is fine. I think the pasta would still have some of the original sauce flavours in it so you would need to be careful what you mixed it with the second time.

  • Nah, this is just weird. I know a few fregans and people who really go the extra mile to ensure they waste as little as possible, but I could never do it. Pasta loses its integrity and bite so quickly, I don’t want to try and reuse an already cooked and dished pasta

  • As a Sous Chef, it’s crucial to understand that leaving cooked pasta with sauce out at room temperature for more than two hours is unsafe. When pasta sits out, it becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria like E. coli and Bacillus cereus, which can lead to food poisoning. If the temperature exceeds 90°F (32°C), this time limit shrinks to just one hour. Rinsing the pasta in the sink does not eliminate the risk; it merely spreads the bacteria around. To ensure food safety, always refrigerate cooked pasta promptly and avoid leaving it out for extended periods.

  • Respect to any parents doing this or eating their kids leftovers. I honestly gag trying to do it but food costs are high so I have so much respect when parents can actually do this, and get a meal out of it. It reduces food wastes and food costs, so why not. You do you.

  • I can’t say I’ve ever done this. I just put it in a container in the fridge and someone will always eat it the next day.

  • Pasta in Australia is really quite cheap so if you were from here I’d say it’s more of a waste to wash it, the water is more important but I’m unsure of the costs involved in America so it may be cost effective but I probably still wouldn’t do it. But each to there own

  • If there is enough for a meal it is frozen if not its passed to our pig of a dog ????

  • Doesn’t really make sense to me! A lot of effort when she could have freezed it

  • Weird, definitely weird. Pasta is fairly cheap. I probably would have eaten it as is. I mean if the meal was good enough for your child, why isnt it good enough for you. Failing that I would have either left if for the next day or given it to our lucky dog.

  • Pasta is fairly cheap so no, I wouldn’t rewash and use it again. I’d rather give it to the chooks

  • Pasta isn’t expensive and it always tastes better the next day anyway. I’d just cook up some more.

  • Ew. No, I don’t think I would do that. It feels a bit weird.

  • Honestly if you want to be really frugal I’d freeze the pre made pasta and reheat at a different time and cook a new lot of pasta for herself. You can buy dry pasta for under $1 a pack which is probably less than the cost of the sauce she washed away. Plus its much simpler.

  • The way she washed it and then re used it i found a bit weird.
