Hello!

Being a practical and efficient woman I have to say Mum’s voice is the choice I have been making with my 2 year old lately over my normal voice.

I am sure all you mums reading this understand exactly what I am talking about when I say, Mum’s voice.

Mum’s voice is the half scream, very direct voice that snaps our kids in to line almost instantly.

Where as normal voice when it comes to parenting I find you repeat yourself in this voice about five times. After the fifth time you still are not guaranteed a positive result. Talk about a time waster!

With my daughter the second Mum’s voice comes out asking her the exact same thing as I was asking with normal voice she jumps to and obeys. Now don’t get me wrong I do feel Mum’s voice has a expiry date. I’m thinking between 2-4 years old. After that the basic ground rules for existence should be established. Some examples:

  • Please do not draw on our couch with a permanent marker!
  • Please do not use the toilet brush to hit our family dog!
  • And my latest favourite. Please do not fill the toilet with a whole roll of toilet paper then flush it and flood our bathroom!

Normal voice in explaining the extreme ‘that’s not cool’ of these situations seems like a complete waste of time. I mean to be a multi tasking mum we need to be efficient right?!

So ladies when that Mum’s voice is required, even though we hate the sound of it ourselves, I say, it’s ok.

In two years from now you will have many new and exciting challenges with these little ones!

  • My kids know when my voice goes to a whisper that I am angry and suddenly they stop and listen

  • I have a very stern, serious Mum voice that even the cat stands up and listens to!

  • Why is it that hubby’s voice works the best? I need to keep my voice neutral and low. When I raise it, my son raises his. Then things get LOUD!

  • I know a Grandma who if the children were naughty and gave the impression it didn’t matter when she explained why they weren’t allowed to do something she would say to them “I am serious” . At one stage after that they called her Grandma Serious. It also distinguished between the 2 Grandmas.

  • I have been practising my mum voice on my two year old but I’m not sure it’s working, maybe I should get her hearing checked ?

  • Lol sometimes my “mum voice” startles me when it comes out. I totally understand the repeating yourself in your nice mum voice 5 or 6 times! Its a never ending battle

  • Yep, got a voice that means “I mean it”!! And that’s when you also use your childs full name.

  • I hate the sound of my voice three toddlers I have ugh

  • Haha, this made me laugh, and was reassuring to hear it’s ok, as I constantly feel guilty for my “mum’s voice”. My baby has started babbling in a tone that I fear is emulating my mum’s voice – that makes me wonder what a terrible example I’m setting!

  • I dont yell I actually become very quiet and do not talk to anyone and it seems to work

  • My voice isn’t a yell or a scream, but, actually deepens and goes quieter. Once I’ve got our son’s attention then I talk normally. I’m hoping it lasts longer than past the age of 2-4 years. Think I might have to put my Rose coloured glasses on lol 🙂

  • Some children take a little longer than 4 lol. I still find myself having to use my mum voice with my son who is almost 9
