Imagine being able to leave notes behind for those who arrive after you. Discovering unexpected stories and information about the places around you — wherever you are. Annotating the world, as you live your life.

From the exact tree under which your hubby proposed, to that hidden Sunny Coast beach you found with calm waves for the littlies, there’s an easy way to capture and share the character of any place. A new mobile app for the iPhone called Findery does just that, making it easy for mums on the go to share a story – or find a story someone else has told – through “geo-tagged” notes on a map.

Findery is the latest innovation from mum and tech entrepreneur Caterina Fake, who also founded photo-sharing site Flickr.  Unlike other mobile apps that focus on recommendations for restaurants, pubs or shopping, Findery’s notes include personal stories, memories, colorful histories, previews into what’s coming and other little known facts. Members can connect with others, and “favourite” or comment on posts.

Notes can include photos, videos and sound files, and can be uploaded and shared publicly. Members may also leave private notes for friends and family to find when they visit a certain spot.

Findery is a great resource for travelling families. For example, the Findery set Dubai visitor guide from a Canadian expat explains the local culture and shows things (spice shops, Pakistani sweets, napping baby camels) that only a local could. The Iceland itinerary traveler, on her trip-of-a-lifetime to Iceland, tells us of candy discounts and icebergs.

You can also discover things you might not have known about your own city. The dog on the tuckerbox set provides interesting perspective and details on life in Sydney, from an Aussie native.

One of our favourite sets is Dear Basha, a heartfelt memory trail left for a seven-year-old by her aunt for her to discover when she’s older.

Findery is available for download in the Australian App Store.
