We’re always told that it takes a special kind of person to be a teacher, but does their job make them the perfect life partners?

Selfless, trustworthy, kind, supportive. It reads like a checklist for the perfect spouse, but it also happens to be a list of qualities that are sought after in one profession above all others. As reported in Southern Living Magazine, when students were asked what they look for in a good teacher, the results were strikingly similar to the traits people look for in a life partner. Hard to argue with that.

As ThinkAloud.net puts it “marrying a teacher is like hitting the jackpot.” Here are a few reasons why:

1. Teachers are patient, kind and good listeners – Teachers have to really listen to their students, and understand their opinions and concerns, in order to develop trust. Not to mention the incredible patience and respect they show in doing so. This sounds like the foundation of a pretty great relationship to me. Coincidence? I think not.

2. Teachers are responsible and can handle any situation – Teachers take responsibility for the education of other people’s kids every single day. Pretty amazing when you think about it. If they can cope with lost textbooks, sudden illness, pigeons in the classroom and still manage to educate thirty unique individuals, we’re pretty sure they can handle anything life throws at them.

3. Teachers are dedicated and passionate – Teachers often go above and beyond in their job, despite being underpaid. They stay back at school late planning lessons, attend weekend sports days and spend their own money on resources to provide students with the best learning opportunities. If they show that kind of commitment to their job, chances are they are pretty committed in their personal life too.

4. Teachers are fun – Let’s face it, kids can be hilarious. It’d be pretty hard to work with them all day every day and not have a laugh once in a while. And most importantly, teachers can laugh at themselves. Kids make sure of that.

So there you have it – if you’re still looking for ‘the one’ maybe they’re out there somewhere doing playground duty right now. And if you’re married to a teacher, you probably knew all these things already – and your spelling is probably always perfect too.
