Hello!

So yesterday I was straightening my hair with my 12 month old playing on the bed next to me, everything was going fine and he was quite entertained playing with his toys. After I had finished with my hair I turned off my straighteners and put them down on the floor, whilst I was getting up to put everything away, my 12 month old had dashed off the bed behind me and crawled round to my straighteners. He reached out for them and I noticed, quickly saying NO and going to move him away but he was too quick and put his hand on them! We went down to emeregency and he had burnt all his palm and a little one on his wrist. I was told it wasn’t as bad as it could have been but he is now bandaged up and we have to return to the burns clinic in a week to check the healing progress. This was the most horrible situation to be in as he was in so much pain and whilst in the ambulance he was being given medication through his nose to calm him down and help with the pain. I have beaten myself up about this so much as I feel like the worst parent but thank you to the lovely hospital staff they reassured me that accidents can happen and little ones can just be too fast!! I know for sure that from now on I will be extremely careful with my little man!

  • I know how you feel, but don’t beat yourself up over it. Kids do these things in such a blink of an eye and you did everything right afterwards. It’s a learning curve for all us mummies and the important thing is to learn from our mistakes. Not long ago I told my very capable little man to hop out of the car when he was very tired. He stubbled and fell head first onto the driveway (luckily it was the small car he fell from and not the 4WD) I felt like a terrible mummy (especially seeing as it was the day before his birthday and he had a lovely big egg on his forehead). He has also got into so many other things he shouldn’t of that I didn’t realise was left out. It happens to all of us!!!!

  • Poor bubba, hope he will be alright. Don’t knock yourself around about it because kids are far too quick sometimes & will get into everything. It’s not like you gave them to him to play with. With so much on our plates being mums, some things slip our minds. We can’t remember & do everything. You’re a good mum & he still loves you xx

  • Poor little man, hope his hands heal quick. My daughter always hurts herself by falling and I always feel like the worst parent for not preventing it. Unless we put our children in a bubble, accidents will happen. Your not a bad mum your just human like the rest of us.

  • It’s not your fault, these things could happen to any of us. I remember watching on Current Affairs a segment on hair straighteners being a real danger to little ones, because they heat up to 200 degrees or something ridiculous, and doesn’t cool down as fast as they heat up. I think it’s actually a really dangerous appliance to ANYBODY and should be sold with a protective cover for storage while it cools down.
