I have been unemployed for over 3 months. Life is very hard. Everyone is asking for experience. But how to get experience if you don’t have the job in the first place. I am being very frustrated

  • I was made redundant a year ago and decided to volunteer and really enjoying the experience and hoping a chance to get into a different sort of field. It sounds like you are getting depressed , but do not give up. 3 months is not that long ,are you applying for the right jobs ? In the meantime perhaps seek help from Centrelink as a friend of mine was grateful when she had to search for a job while her hub was not working and had her mum living with her . Hope you get support soon .

  • I know how disheartening it can be. When I was out of work for a while, I felt like I was going mad as it was a catch-22 situation. I checked with a couple of charities, and also a community centre near us, and I was able to do some volunteer work in the area I wanted to work in. That way, I got some experience, and got to know people in the industry, and that’s what made the difference when I applied for jobs.

  • My son is in the same postion. He applies for more than 10 jobs a week and in the last four months only 2 replied to say he was unsuccessful. They all ask for experience, but as you said how can he get experience if no one will give him a chance. He is very down at the moment, he can’t even volunteer as they say there is too much red tape to deal with, so what can he do. I wish you luck with your job search.

  • I remember applying for over 500 jobs in a four month period and getting nowhere. It is soul destroying, depressing and very very hard, but don’t give up! I ended up getting work telemarketing ( horrible but it paid) and from there moved into call centre work (still horrible but better paid) and it gave me the experience they all wanted! Good luck and I hope something comes up soon

  • It’s a real catch 22 situation. Would doing some volunteer work in the area you’re seeking employment in help? Good luck.

  • As hard as it is just keep going, the other thing to think about is doing some volunteer work in the field you want to get into, that way you can get the experience you need

  • I know how you feel my son is 18 and when he left school he applied for nearly 32 jobs and every time it would come back the same sorry you either don’t have enough life skills or you don’t have the right skills for this kind of job.

Really how are you might to get life skills or any kind of skills if no one is willing to give you a go, eventually he got a job and loves what he’s doing but i really feel sorry for the people that are still out there struggling for companies to just give them a go.
Good luck i really hope something comes along for you soon.
