Cooking with children is always a fun activity even though it can sometimes be messy. My children love decorating Marie biscuits with icing and putting lolly faces on the biscuits. Another cooking activity my children love is making rum ball…. now this CAN get messy. They love to cook but they also love licking the spoon or the beaters after we have finished baking. What food to you make with your children?

  • Cooking has always been a great activity to do with kids, and yes, the spoon and bowl licking is always eagerly anticipated BUT something struck me the other day. I’m not sure it’s safe to lick cake mix etc because of the raw egg.

  • It really depends on the age but biscuits are always good as they can help to put them on the trays, to cut them out or to decorate them

  • I get hounded by the kids with “lets make a cake” when the reality is I make & bake & they just lick the bowl & beaters!

  • All of my children have helped in one way or another to do some sort of cooking. They have helped me with roasts to cooking cakes. Lamingtons can be a real mess. lol. It is a great way to spend fun quality time and also helps set them up a little bit for later. The spoon and bowl licking is quite common, isnt it!. lol.

  • When I was young Mum always gave me the spoon and bowl ans well as the beaters and than I got to do all the cake toppings as in the sprinkles and hundred and thousands on the cakes. and Would was allowed to help when she made other things I would get to add the eggs and things like that. I blame Mum for all her backing that I love cake mix nows our cakes are never thick

  • Everything, I can’t walk in the kitchen without the kids. When they started to get fussy about eating certain foods, I decided if they help make it, there’s a better chance of them eating it. My two are about to turn 5 and 6 years old. They can pretty much do most things under supervision. Homemade Tortillas, pizza, cakes, biscuits and the veggies for dinner

    • Such a good idea. They may appreciate the time spent preparing the meals also.

  • I love baking :D I can’t wait till my girls are a bit older so they can really help and have fun with it. We tried making cupcakes the other day and the oldest lost interest about halfway through. She definitely enjoyed eating them though lol.

  • We always loved to have fun together in the kitchen. Using cookie cutters in animal shapes is a great way to encourage kids to eat vegies, they can either use them to cut shapes from fresh vegies, or use them to shape cooked vegies too. Helping to stir cake and biscuit batter, sprinkling toppings over and icing cakes and biscuits, and “licking” the bowl is always something to look forward to. I made up a recipe book with simple recipes (sweet and savoury) that were “kid friendly”, so when we were going to have a cooking day, I always encouraged the kids to pick a recipe that we could make together. And they were always so proud of “their” creations. Having their own aprons and set of baking utensils really made it fun for them.

    • Making biscuits with cookie cutters is a great idea. Thanks.
