This is a story of optimism and of empowerment and I am very proud to share the story of the beautiful women in my family. When I was only 16 my grandmother passed away from Ovarian Cancer. She had fought very hard for some time and unfortunately lost the fight. Ovarian Cancer is aggressive and is a silent killer with very little symptoms showing until it is too late. My Grandmother went to the doctor with concerns over bloating and just not feeling well and she was dismissed. She didnt push it with the doctor and just accepted it as fact – she was ok. By the time the cancer was found it was too late. She was a beautiful woman who died too young because she didn’t question what she felt was something wrong. On Monday my mother went into surgery to have a full hysterectomy. She found out that she had a 90% chance of developing Ovarian cancer and unlike my beautiful grandmother – had a chance to do something about her life before she too ended up with the cancer. Still recovering in hospital she has now saved her own life as well as my aunties and all the female members of our family. Because of her actions we now have the information and knowledge to know we have control in our futures. I am 26 but I now know that my gene percentage is in the 80% range and post children will also have the option to have the operation. I thank my mum for being so brave and allowing me to have a mum for as long as God permits <3 photo – three generations of women empowered because of my mothers actions – my mother, my sister and my daughter <3
