I have been wanting a veggie patch for a few years now. I thought it was really hard, and being a small woman, I thought I could never build one without a man’s help – getting wooden sleepers, screws, drilling, heavy lifting and how on earth could I get those from the hardware store anyway? Well I found online a container garden that hold excess water in the base as a reservoir. It has a net cover on a hinged frame that prevents the birds eating the veggies and many insects too. It’s 1m by 2m – really quite large. I had to load the car boot with about 10 bags of potting mix and 4 of smelly cow manure, but I managed to do all this, assemble the garden, and plant seeds and seedlings over three days. I love my new veggie garden. The best bit is the cover has an microspray irrigation system attached so I can connect it to my garden hose and water it with a fine spray. It comes in other sizes too so even a small space can have a covered, container garden growing leafy greens or tomatoes. It makes me feel so good growing healthy produce myself. I love to go out in the garden every afternoon to see how my ‘babies’ are growing.
