We care for our grandkids ,12yrs now .Never thought we would end up with a drug addict daughter.First child ,girl,so cute full of life .Living in rural town first time coming from the city ,was a change, starting out again with my hubby &youngest came with us &our 16yr stayed with family.Well didn’t turn out well .Ended up living with us again ,with boyfriend in tow.Pregant..She ended up leaving without their child .They told us we be back in next bus from city .Well months later we ,took fulltime care of her ,didn’t want her in welfare .So 10yrs later same daughter returned pregant ,wanting to have her children with us ,lots of soul searching ,we said no ,ur an adult we have 1ofcur children ,this 1 raise on own .Baby boy was born ,2weeks later Family S.A came into it .7months later we brought him home .But ended up we don’t have any rights ,get told how we raise our grandson ,who had access &photos sent to biological parents whom have not even sent a card or anything.Everything we do needs to be confirmed with Family Sa ,yes protect children ,which we do .But the people who are related to our grandson can see him even though had not contact with hi. .Kindy at 3yrs old ,we had no say ,all other kids start at 3.t or 4.Strangeers tell us about our own grandson .I’ve been abused by the boys worker ,all because u spoke to his worker out of hours &at kindy ,only asked if she(worker) to ring me .So we have our grandson till 18 ,but have no say in anything even if hes our kin ,no way to be treated by government worker .P.s his biological gave my daughter drugs for sex ,that’s how our grandson came about .We luv all our girls &grandkids .If grandparents are willing to take child on all boxes are ticked we should be left alone to try & be a family .without being dictated to .

  • I agree with you, the system never works the way it should.

  • The red tape in this country is astounding at times. I do feel for you and it’s not fair that they dictate to you. Sure things have to be done by the books, but to treat somebody like a babysitter and not the family of these children whom you love is not right. There are so many more things I could say because I have been through so much red tape in a different situation but certainly know the frustration of trying to be a family and a parent and being dictated to by the sometimes ridiculous things the law makes you do. It sometimes feels like you are jumping through hoops for other people and that you can’t live your own life. It sounds like you are very self sacrifing and have given these children a wonderful nurturing, regular upbringing. I wouldn’t take on board this workers attitude, I know how hard it is to ignore but act like it doesn’t affect you and that is the worst thing for these sort of people, and plus then the kids don’t feel the conflict. You’re doing a great thing.

  • Best to focus on the positive, and that is the children. You are very lucky to spend so much time with them. I know my parents wish they had more time with their grandchildren.
