An easy way to reduce the cost of your grocery bills is to buy home brand for basic staple ingredients. Sugar, is just sugar. Nothing else gets added to flour, it’s just flour! If you prefer to buy another brand because of ethical reasons, fair enough, if not, buy the generic brand for basic ingredients. Their staple pantry items are usually much cheaper than leading brands and will save you money!

  • I absolutely agree on that . My brother is always seem to be struggling with finances buys the dearer margarine with omega 3, free range meat and eggs etc. which adds up to higher grocery bills. The only items you cant have home brands are the vegies dept as fresh is always best , and they have a lot of markdowns later in the day and toward the weekend . I am fussy on perishable foods and a lot get wasted if it rots in the fridge too quickly .

  • I tend to buy the basic items of generic things. Such as sugar, flour just like you. A lot if generic brand products are just nasty though. I also avoid brands that are not made in Australia, such as a lot of Coles products. I avoid pork because of the sowing stalls used to produce it and I only buy cage free eggs. We need to step up, maybe spend that little bit more, to keep our farmers and farm animals safe

  • Very true. I’ve done this for a while. If buying raw ingredients just buy home brand. Otherwise you are just paying for advertising.

  • I buy the home brands for basics, so much cheaper and as you say, flour is flour and sugar is sugar. No point in spending 3 times as much for the same thing.
