Hello!

My 8 year old always wanted to do ballet and had tried on and off since 2 years old. She always found it too hard to jump and walk on “tippy toes”. She has finally discovered the reason why – hyper flexible joints. Finally, she can laugh about why ballet was too hard for her. The podiatrist was great with her and has helped her focus on and enjoy what her joints are perfect for – swimming!!! One of her best friends at school has exactly the same issue and also has custom made orthotics. Knowing your own body and its strengths and weaknesses is great.

  • Good to know – my godchild has hyper-flexibility also and we thought dancing would suit – perhaps swimming is the go

    • Dancing and leaping are probably not the best! Apparently many of Australia’s (and the worlds) elite swimmers are hyper flexible.

  • Sometimes it’s not so much that something is “wrong” with your kid as that you simply need to know a “why”; then it’s just something to work with.

  • Bodies are so very different and good that she has found out what suits her body type.

    • Agreed. It’s important to understand and respect this.

  • Great that you found out! I hope she will enjoy her swimming lessons now! :-)
