I feel so sad as mu mother had a stroke just before Christmas and is now in a Nursing Home she does not even realise that she is there as all that she does is wake for breakfast and then they shower her and then she will sleep until lunch time and then wake up and have lunch and then go back to sleep again until dinner time she has only been in the Nursing Home for 2 weeks now I keep praying that I day she just get out of that bed and be able to walk and talk again but I don’t think this will ever happen she is only 80 years old I visit her at least twice a week but she does not even know that we were there as she is asleep Oh please let this nightmare stop I really want my mum back

  • I am so sorry for you. It must be so hard for you. Stay strong. I have a neighbour who is in his 80s – he had a stroke quite a few years ago now. He was hospitalised for months. With time and physiotherapy, he can now drive a modified car. He moves around with a cane or a walker or a wheelchair – depends on how tired he is I guess. Give it time. I hope your mum can recover from her stroke eventually.

  • That is so very sad, you have my condolences. I visit my mother twice a year, she is 75 years this year and it saddens me to think that I may only see her for approx. another 10 times if she makes it to 80. Old age is a sad disease :(

  • It must be very hard for you at the moment especially being so close to your mum and we can only pray that she will gain her strength again . Perhaps if you are feeling very depressed and lonely is to ring up counselling services such as Lifeline or beyond Blue and express your feelings with them . Even though you may not feel like talking . Just having someone who is willing to listen can make wonders to our mood and mental health . Being there for your mother is enough to make her feel better so don’t think you are in any way helpless or not needed at all. Hope you get some support very soon .

  • Also; if you find face to face contact difficult; maybe try telephone or internet services/supports. Lifeline and other similar services can talk with you and offer support. This community is thinking of you during this difficult time. x

  • Sorry to read about your mum and your distress. Have you spoken to anyone at the home about how you are feeling. Might be a good idea for you to talk with someone? Wishing your mum well.

    • It’s so very important to talk to those who can support you through this difficult time – seeing loved ones suffer like this is incredibly hard.
