Hello!

Our nine year old helped to light candles this weekend. She put a freshly blown out match into the table cloth and it singed a hole. This was done despite clear instructions from us, and full supervision. This reminded me of the time I was exactly the same age and did a similar thing with a rolled up sheet of newspaper and singed a hole in my parents kitchen Lino. Both are pretty bad, but great reminders of the risks matches, candles and similar pose.

  • The candles that re-light are dangerous. They need to be long, not pushed into the cake very far, and be able to very carefully lifted out from the bottom and the tip dipped in cold water. A friend of mine had some and we tried just aobut everything to put them out. They needed something damp/wet on the wick to put them out.

  • good points made from the other mums, we learnt our lesson when my Mother in law purchased those candles that relight when blown out, they got mixed into the normal candles after use, lets just say my son got a little burn on his hand. He now never touches the candles after use… He leaves it to the adults.

    • Those hard to put out candles are something to be careful of for sure!!!! The kind of thing you try once and then never again. Good point.

  • This is a good reminder. The plate idea is clever.

  • I always have a plate ready for matches/ candles, regardless of who is lighting them.

  • Absolutely! It can be dangerous, even under strict supervision!

  • At least she got to see the results of matches and materials with supervision. A good lesson to learn!
