Hello!

Where do I start here goes nothing, I have so much money problems not caused by gambling or drinking or even excessive spending it’s trying to pay off medical bills as I have had to have 3 operations in the past 2 years and now I am waiting for another operation on my thyroid to remove a cancerous nodule. I am so far behind in my bills it’s not funny anymore and my husband is the only one working as I had to give up work due to ill health. Sorry for the rant but I am feeling so stressed out today I would just like to say a big thank you for listening to me

  • Definitely go to my budget or someone because they take all the stress away

  • Contacting the companies that you owe money to is so important, as most of them are willing to work out a payment plan for you. Trouble usually only happens when you don’t let them know what’s happening, and you fall behind/don’t pay bills. Keep them informed & you’ll be fine. I had some hideous financial problems, and contacted my superannuation fund, and they were so helpful. They sent a form out for me, I filled it out & sent it back, and I had some of my super money in the bank within 2 weeks.

  • I am glad the company has set up a payment plan for you. I really hope your health gets better and that this will be the last operation you need. My friend just accessed their superannuation due to hardship caused by illness and bills. You just have to contact the company and they will send out the forms for you to fill in. It took less than a month for the payment to be paid to her..

  • It is good to hear that the company has made it a bit easier for you, i hope your feeling a bit better and i hope things get better

  • Hang in there… you’ll find a lot of companies will help set up payment plans which should at least alleviate some of the stress so you can focus on your health!

  • Debt is not a nice place to be in.
Have you thought about going to see a financial advisor they are really helpful people who can go through your finances and show you were you can save money and how much you can afford to repay your debts.
You also need to call the people who you owe the money to and explain your situation and ask for them to set up a payment plan for you, your be surprised at how many companies actually do this.
Good luck and hopefully you get this on the right track soon.

    • Many thanks I rang a couple of companies yesterday and explained my situation to them to my surprise they agreed to help me they will let me pay it off weekly like $50 a week until 6months then they will review it again at least it’s a start
      Many thanks

  • Not nice at all. I hope things pick up for you in the future both health wise and financially. I know it can be quite frustrating and stressful. Wish you all the best.

  • I feel for you and especially that you are in ill health and have to give up work because of it. I have not had a medical situation, but another one not through, drinking or gambling etc just like you that has put me behind as well. I’m also just getting a single income from my wage. Some days are more stressful than others as the bills mount up, it becomes overwhelming and you don’t know which way to turn and become fearful of going to the mailbox. I had to totally sit back and just divorce all emotion from the situation and look at what bills I could immediately address and which ones I had to find a
Plan for. I agree with another comment about trying to access your superannuation on compassionate grounds. Best of luck x

    • Many thanks, I now have a appointment at centrelink this week to see if I can get some help. If no help here I will try the superannuation. Many thanks to everyone as I do not feel so stressed

  • Hopefully by now you have been able to sort some things out. Most places will let you pay things over more time. Like already said, you may be able to get some sort of payment from centrelink, your super might also pay out. Hope your financial situation improves and i hope your health is better too. Try not to stress, there will eventually be a light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Ring Centrelink – there are free government financial advice organisations. I believe they will help you negotiate reduced payments, and in some circumstances you may be eligible for a short term govt loan.

  • That’s sad to read Kim. Is there any support groups around you that might be able to help or some jobs you could do for friends and family that aren’t too taxing for your health. Try to find something to feel proud about. I had a really upset day today about all my bills too that has only got worse now we are on my small income. I know my bills are mounting up but each time I pay a little off or a small one I try to look at it as a win. Good luck and I hope you are better soon.

  • I have a friend who is using My Budget to help pay off their bills, it’s really helped them to get back on top of things. Good luck, I hope things get better for you.

  • I am so sorry to hear this but I was going to say the same as the previous comment, you can access or superannuation or your husbands for medical bills, paying your rates or if you are behind in your mortgage, a friend of mine did this and I think it only took about 3 weeks and she had the money and peace of mind. She paid off everything and is now starting fresh. So I would look into it. Good Luck.

  • So sorry to hear what you are going through. A similiar discussion was brought up in my baby group recently snd a few of the girls said you can access up to $10,000 of your super if you are experiencing financial hardship. It may be worth looking into

  • I am so sorry to hear about all you are and have been going through. I would be ringing as many of the companies the bills are from and see if you can make affordable payment agreements explain every thing as some can be helpful

  • No need to say thanks for listening. I was right there with you when I was reading your story. I don’t have any major medical complaints that require operation, I do however have massive legal bills. In July last year my greedy ex partner decided because he wanted to move that he would start a custody battle and accuse me of bad parenting ( a lie). So far it has cost between $15,000 and $20,000 dollars. I’m a single parent currently with shared care until we resolve it through court. I was not eligible for legal aid and earn a basic wage. It really sucks and I know what you are going through in terms of money. It doesn’t quite seem fair. It seems to be middle class Australia that gets the most punished financially.
