Hello!

My son is 4. His birthday is at the end of April & this year he started school. I know, I know I have heard it ALL. That he will struggle when he is in year 12 and won’t be able to go out drinking with his mates (to that I say PHEW), that he will struggle socially (not so far…), that he will be out of place among his peers (he is one of the tallest & most quickly settled in his class) & all the way through to just a plain “how could I??”

My eldest is a September birthday so there was no question about when he was to start school- but the decision to send my little man this year was massive!! So far, he is absolutely LOVING school & more importantly… loving himself! Yes, there are kids in his class that are 15 months older than him, but there is also a little girl who is younger & really does it really matter?!

As a second child he knows the school routine, he knows the teachers, he has a lot of big boys to look out for him in his brothers mates & there are quite a few other siblings in his year that he recognises. seriously so far he is going really well!

Starting school is a MASSIVE step in the lives of not only the child, but also the entire family. I don’t believe there is ever a “right” time to do anything, so don’t judge! I’m doing the best I can!!

  • My friend has a daughter who will be 5 next year in the April Just before the cut-off date so she will start at the beginning of the year.

  • My son was born in October. He has friends born at different times throughout the year and I never noticed any difference between them. Until they started kindy. Then you notice! 2 months age difference looks more like 12 months

  • Sounds like he’s doing wonderfully and that you gave made the right decision. Some kids cope with school, some don’t, regardless of what age they start

  • no judgement here! My son started school this year and is slowing settling in. he has sensory issues, anxiety and struggles to be part of a group. After a rocky start, with many melt downs, we are progressing well. We are taking it step by step, week by week.

  • I started school early and I was unable to go out with my friends when they all went out, but my boyfriend (now husband) was always there and taking me to parties at his mates houses so I got to go out, just not clubbing. I thank my parents for putting me in a year early as the girls in the year below me were horrible!!
