Oh how well I know your story except we DO rent and couldn’t pay it, but our brilliant landlords did not evict us and we are catching up! Although we do own an old van, and I was at the point of working out how to turn it into living quarters!
Mine rang me one day last year and said he had quit his job and was looking for work in construction as better hours and pay. Nothing happened despite applying for everything possible. We decided to start our own business.
During winter it was fine, but come summer and work dried up. In three months we had 2 jobs come in. We played meal alternates – one day I would have breakfast but no lunch, and he would have lunch, the next day we would swap. Nothing got thrown out and we had some interesting left over meals… Thank God we had ordered Chrisco hampers, as we lived off those for ages.
Our little girl always comes first, and we made sure she ate properly, but it was so hard hearing other people planning holidays and outings, knowing we could take her to the park and not much else!
I even had a go at my brother when he complained about some expensive show he had taken his kids to. Even worse was when she started out growing all her clothes.
Happily he has picked up a full time job, but not in construction, so the hours are lousy and he works overtime but does not get paid for it, but at least it is money in the door! And yes – spaghetti and tinned tomatoes can be stretched over several meals!
