Hello!

I was chatting with my very kind friend the other day saying I have always wanted a slow cooker as everyone seems to have one and rave about how great they are. She said she has one bit does not use it. Then she came over for a cup of tea this week and brought me her slow cooker and said she never uses it and would like me to have it as she felt I would use it. So kind. Anyway I cooked a very nice beef goulash last night but the kids did not like it as they are not a fan of casseroles and stews. I was wondering can anyone recommend a recipe or book to buy for the slow cooker with nice kid friendly recipes. I did look on taste.com where i get a lot of recipes from usually and there was not much choice and nothing had 5 stars. thanks.

  • Just google ‘Slow Cooker recipe Books’ and you’ll see a heap to choose from. Then go for ‘family friendly’ and you should have heaps.
I loved our slow cooker. Great for working mum’s. you can put it on in the morning and then it’s ready for when you get home. Great for stews and casseroles but also for roasts.

  • I don’t really know the benefits of a slow cooker , yet I am surrounded by people who use them . They cook stews and congee in them , make it in the evenings , turn it on and have it ready next morning . I said isn’t that wasting electricity ??

  • Lucky you – slow cookers are wonderful!

  • If they prefer ‘curry’ style meals then this might be the place to start. For example butter chicken or lamb korma. A google search will bring up some slow cooker adapted recipes. Generally you add about half the liquid for a slow cooker than you would for a dish cooked on the stove. Enjoy!

  • We just had slow cooked spaghetti bolognese for tea tonight….I started cooking it around 9.30 this morning, went to Playgroup, picked my niece and nephew up from school and only had to cook the pasta on the stove before saving. My toddler finished this meal quicker than any other!

So easy…I used chicken mince (well, I didn’t have mince, only fillets which I minced up in the food processor in no time), which I added to the slow cooker with a jar of passata, couple tablespoons of tomato paste, dried Italian herbs and anything else that might take your fancy! This time I quickly fried up some onion, capsicum and mushrooms on the stove and threw that in too (my cooker doesn’t have the capability to sear/brown food first, some do). The chicken mince I put in raw though browning its first might have given extra flavour, I just didn’t want to spend more time on dinner! My nephew thought it tasted great!

I’ve cooked meatballs in tomato sauce, a potato bake and creamed rice/rice pudding too :)

  • mmmm spare ribs are the best it them! brown on the stove top, throw in what ever flavours you like or a marinate, add a little water and cook 4hrs fast or 8hrs slow. Enjoy your new toy!

  • I cook pretty much anything in my slow cooker… From silverside to chicken noodle soup :) I also don’t follow the reciepes on the back… But my kids seem to live the country style chicken ! You can but the packet from woollies in the slow cooker section :)
    Good luck
