There’s a parenting quiz for kids doing the rounds on social media – are you prepared for the answers?

They say that drunken people, children and leggings always tell the truth. Well, two of these can be avoided (and should be), but it’s tough to avoid your child when you’re a parent. And their honesty can be just as brutal as capturing a glimpse of your bum in a changing room mirror when you least expect it.

Yet maybe it’s because of this no-holds-barred honesty that we’re compelled to ask our kids questions we’re not sure we want the answers to. Maybe we want to see our children’s perspective of our lives and see ourselves through their eyes. And maybe we want to do this while we still have the chance to changes the answers.

There is a new sensation sweeping the Internet that does just that. The quiz, called “23 Questions to ask Mummy and Daddy”, is popping up on Facebook feeds globally, with many parents posting the often-hilarious responses back on their pages and encouraging others to do the same.

Yet for the hundreds of funny responses, there may be a response that makes our throats catch a little and that makes us think, “Oh no, is that what my child really thinks of me?”

A friend when kissing her three year old one night was aghast when her daughter said, “Mum, you always smell of wine.” And even though this mum enjoyed a glass of wine with dinner often, it was only one, and it wasn’t ‘always”. Yet her daughter connected ‘wine’ with ‘mum’s good night kiss’ which was a wakeup call for my friend that wasn’t how she wanted to be remembered by her daughter.

Another friend had once accidently recorded herself on her phone asking her children to do something they didn’t want to do. “I sounded so mean but that’s what I sound like to my kids?” she said. That struck a chord with me, as often I hear myself and think, “When did I become someone who talks like that? And to my kids?” It’s been a good life lesson for me.

As will these answers to this fun quiz. Because that’s what the quiz is – fun! It’s a bit of a laugh and a way of capturing the beautiful innocence and honesty of our children before they’re old enough to mask it.

And if there is a lesson in these answers, then that’s the perfect opportunity to make a change so you get a different response next time you ask it!

  • I did this with my boys (aged 13 and 10) totally out of curiosity and I’m so glad that I did. It was so nice to hear that at that age they both said (without interaction) that I always say I love them.
