Australians are venting their anger after a South Australian shopper spotted a local supermarket promoting a buy now, pay later program as a way to buy groceries.

The shopper shared images of Afterpay signs at a Drakes supermarket on reddit, headlining the post, ‘Cost of living hack: get into crippling debt just to stay alive’.

Independent supermarket chain Drakes, which has stores in South Australia and Queensland, introduced Afterpay last year, becoming the first Australian supermarket to do so.

The furious shopper continued: “It’s one thing to have Afterpay at all, another to use it for groceries – but I honestly find if ridiculous that the supermarkets are actually promoting this sh*t.”

The post was met with a flurry of angry comments from fellow Aussies who say it’s a ‘disgrace’.

“Snags on AfterPay. We’re f***ed,” wrote one person.

“Everyday items shouldn’t be used on Afterpay, hell I would say if you have to Afterpay it you can’t afford it. I can understand emergency items on Afterpay. Car repairs for example. But groceries, bills etc. are the worst things to Afterpay, because there’s always more food to buy and another bill to pay. You’ll end up in a descending cycle of increasing debt as each bill or grocery shop builds upon the last until you can no longer pay. Then the fees start to rack up from Afterpay to really drive the nail into the debt coffin,” added another.

But there are those who don’t see a problem with it.

One person saying, “How is this any different from someone using a credit card to purchase groceries?”

While others admitted they have used buy now, pay later programs to buy groceries, without an issue.

“I’ve used ZipPay to buy Woolworths cards for my weekly shopping, long before the cost of living crisis. Currently debt free so I guess it helped at the time,” said one shopper.

Drakes Supermarkets director John-Paul Drake said in an ABC radio interview last year that the company did have some reservations about introducing the payment method, but did so to meet customer demand.

“[At first] I looked at Afterpay like, ‘Well if you’re using Afterpay, that means you’re struggling to pay for something,’ and when we started to actually look into it, that wasn’t the case at all,” he said.

Would you (or have you) used buy now, pay later to pay for groceries? Let us know in the comments below.

  • I love Afterpay. I love ZIP pay. The more places I can use it the better. Yes I have used it for groceries before via gift cards but when there is massive payments I need to make at the same time such as Car Rego, Car Service etc. It has been a great tool and gives me so much financial flexibility. Also If you make payments on time there’s no fees so it’s a much better option for most people compared to things like credit cards. Would you say people using credit cards to buy shopping can’t afford it? I don’t think so. People need to stop shaming BNPL and understand the benefits.

  • No definitely not. I’ve never done after pay and I’m not planning on doing it.

  • Wow, this is really preying on those shoppers who are already struggling and is not supporting them at all to help feed their families. How about the supermarkets make the items cheaper and take less of a profit themselves!!

  • Your debt, your choice.

  • I think it is a ridiculous thing to promote too. I think the whole concept should only be for emergencies on necessary items like a replacement fridge or a car repair. I remember seeing a post about a girl having her $90 Frank Green water bottle stolen. She had only had it a day and still had to pay it off on afterpay. That said it all. People are never going to learn to budget, save for what they need and wait for what they want when these easy options are in their face.

  • We tend to avoid after pay for anything, let alone groceries.
When there is no money for groceries, you could get help from the Foodbank.
There are also plenty of prgramsyou could reach out to when needed to get help with debt

  • Not something I would use but everyone is different and has different circumstances. Great care should always be taken with any kind of debt.

    • Debt needs to be managed with discipline and balances and due dates paid on time.

  • I tend to avoid this – I actually find it easier to just know I’ve got one credit card payment coming up.

  • I think this is a terrible idea. It’s easy to hear from people who have had no problem paying it back, but what about people who are really down and out and need to feed their family, who will be risking defaults just to get dinner on the table. The issue isn’t finding another way to pay, it’s super markets going back to pre covid prices and not making over a bill in profits.
