Trying to find a baby name that’s unique is pretty difficult these days – it seems that every moniker (with every possible spelling!) has been used before.

But if you’re looking for a rare gem of a baby name, this list could be the answer to your prayers.

The name experts at Nameberry have revealed the 10 rarest names that have been used less than 25 times in the US.

Here’s a look at the rarest names in the world right now:

Hester

According to Nameberry’s research, there are fewer than five girls with this name in the US. The name hails from the romance novel The Scarlet Letter, first published in 1850.

Romilly

Again, just five girls have this unique name – which was used by actor Emma Thompson as her daughter Gaia’s middle name in 1999.

Bee

While Beatrice remains popular, there are just eight girls with this shortened version.

Lilac

Botanical baby names continue to rise in popularity, but Lilac is far rarer, with just 25 girls carrying this name.

Ottilie

This name is actually on the rise for boys and girls. It has a French origin, meaning ‘prosperous in battle’.

Zebedee

Nameberry CEO Pamela Redmond told the Daily Mail: ‘Z names are cool for Gen-Z, and this variation of the New Testament Zebediah is zippy.’

Lorcan

Just 13 boys have this rare Irish name, which means little or fierce and was the name of several ancient kings.

Rafferty

Just 18 boys currently have this name, which Jude Law and Sadie Frost gave to their son in 1996.

Grover

Slightly more popular, with 23 boys named Grover, it was the name Lena Dunham’s character used for her baby in Girls.

Ajax

A strong, heroic Greek name, just 23 boys have been given this moniker.

Baby Name Lists

We’ve put together a whole host of baby name lists to help you discover the perfect moniker for your bub:

  • I really love Lorcan. Super unique and could go for either gender.

    Reply

  • Ajax spray and wipe lol

    Reply

  • Bee is such a cute name! I’ve heard of it as a nickname for other names but not on its own

    Reply

  • I’ve heard of Rafferty and Ajax before as names, but none of the others.

    Reply

  • Love Rafferty, some of the others are not great.

    Reply

  • Interesting names.

    Reply

  • I can honestly see why most of these names are rare… although a couple are quite cute.

    Reply

  • My Daughter’s name is Scotiah, pronounced Scosha. It’s a Gaelic version of Scott and I love it and I’m quite sure she’s the only girl in at least Australia with it.

    Reply

  • Lorac and Ajax have to be the two names that I haven’t come across yet. I would be sitting on the fence about the name Ajax as it reminds me of the Ajax cleaning spray.

    Reply

  • Lorcan and Lilac are quite cool.

    Reply

  • I don’t think Hester is that unusual, quite common in the Netherlands

    Reply

  • Omg Grover lol! Some are cute though

    Reply

  • Some are lovely but they are probably rare for a reason.

    Reply

  • Interesting names there. Could use some of them, but Grover I really don’t get. Some people must be fans of Sesame Street.

    Reply

  • Adorable names I like this name the most Rafferty!

    Reply

  • Surely nobody in a country that airs Sesame Street could call their child Grover. He’s a nice kind of muppet, but the child would cop a lot of stirring.

    Reply

  • Not really fond of any of these to be honest but each to their own!!

    Reply

  • I know a Rafferty, such a cool name. Grover – I can only see blue and hear the characters voice in Sesame St. Ajax – cleaning product.
    Bee – like the insect?

    Reply

  • Grover reminds me of that blue monster on Sesame Street and Ajax the cleaning spray! I don’t think I would really consider any of these names.
Bee doesn’t really seem rare either…

    Reply

  • Rare doesn’t always equal great in my opinion. I don’t mind Rafferty, I actually have a Rafael. Rafferty just happens to be the name of my primary schools classroom pet rat.
