We all have things that we could probably get rid of in our house, but there are a few things that is fairly common amongst many households, that frankly, we can do without.

1. Toilet Seat cover and rugs

Why you don’t need it
Toilet seat covers and rugs seem like a great idea. They keep your feet warm during winter and your toilet looking good… or do they? These fluffy items are actually filthy bacterial breeding grounds, where they provide moist warm environments to all different sorts of germs. Every time you flush the toilet, your throw gasoline onto the fire, or germs onto the rug. You essentially putting your feet on a petri dish of bacteria every time you go to the toilet. So throw this away, and wear a pair of socks if the ground really is too cold.

2. Random picture frames

Why you don’t need it
Is your home filled with random picture frames that don’t really go well together? Well maybe you should consider packing them away. A house filled with lots of pictures and frames can make a house look crowded and possibly tacky. Instead, you should choose your most expensive and largest picture frames, and feature them prominently in your home. This draws your attention towards them without making your walls and cupboards appear cluttered.

3. Old curtains

Why you don’t need it
If you have curtains that haven’t been changed since the 70’s, its probably time you consider investing in new ones. Having very old outdated curtains can detract from the look of your home, as your more modern furniture will look jarring against these old fashioned curtains. Updating your curtains is a great way to add a splash of life to your home. Alternatively, if you have a nice window view and rarely use the curtains, get rid of them, it will open up the room and make let in more natural light.

4. Old floral vases

Why you don’t need it
We have all been given a LOT of floral vases as presents throughout the years, but how many do we really use? Get rid of these bulky vases that take up lots of room within your cupboard, and keep one for the odd occasion when you actually get given flowers.

So there you have it, a few things that your home can do without!
Do you have any suggestions for things that people tend to have but really don’t need?

  • A toilet mat only gets filthy if you leave the toilet seat up to flush which, if you do, is the least of your worries? Is your toothbrush within a few meters of an un-lidded toilet flushing? You might want to reconsider that. Or you could just close the toilet seat prior to each flush and avoid toilet filth on both your floor mats and toothbrushes 😉

    • yep well said! i totally agree! shut the lid

  • yay I think my house passes (well maybe apart from the curtains lol!) – I didn’t think fluffly toilet covers were still made! – I like the tip about the photo frames – maybe another way would be to spray paint them all the same colour and group them so it appears less crowded!

    • Fluffy toilet seat covers are still made-I was surprised and shocked! 😉
