Here is a fun physical activity ‘crossing the midline’ that helps children with their focus and school work.

Crossing the midline (imagine there is an invisible line down the centre of your body) helps with planning, sequencing and also bilateral integration.

BEES KNEES (Skill developed: Crossing midline, focus, balance, reading, writing) (2+ minutes)

  1. Stand with your legs apart and close your eyes.
  2. Now using your left hand, reach in between your legs and touch the back of your right knee.
  3. Swap and touch the back of your left knee with your right hand.
  4. Do this 10 times then touch the front of your knees with the opposite hands.
  5. Try it with your eyes open now.
  6. Now try touching your opposite feet.

Do this everyday – it doesn’t take long and helps your brain work harder so it even helps make reading easier without doing any reading!

What tricks do you have to help your kids with their focus?

  • What a great little activity, it is so much harder doing things with your eyes closed. Making you concentrate on left, right opposites and finding a part of your body with your eyes closed can be trickier than you think especially for young children.

  • so basically stretching?
getting the kids to have a little movement but not a massive physical thing to get them hyper more like yoga to help them settle.
Not a bad idea although i am sceptical about it working with my daughter.

    • Hi. It’s a basic neuroplasticity exercise that helps connect the left hemisphere and right hemisphere of the brain. Stretching is also good for reducing anxiety in children, but this exercise specifically works the brain as well as the body 🙂 Jacq
