Move over fancy kitchens and manicured lawns, a new status symbol has arrived: the humble household appliance.

That’s right, according to the Samsung Australians @ Home Report: 2024 Smart Living Edition, a generational shift is underway in how we view our fridges, washing machines, ovens, and even our vacuums. Forget simply wanting them to work, Aussies, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are craving appliances that are as stylish as they are functional.

Forget the Joneses, it’s all about keeping up with the fridge

The report reveals a surprising trend: appliance envy. Over a quarter (28%) of Australians admit they prefer visiting homes decked out with modern, sleek appliances. And for Gen Z, the feeling is even stronger, with almost a third (32%) feeling judged for their outdated or mismatched appliances.

But it’s not just about impressing guests. The report highlights how a stylish home environment, complete with envy-worthy appliances, is becoming key to creating core memories. A quarter (25%) of Aussies, and over a third (34%) of Gen Z, are more likely to host gatherings if they have a “fancy” fridge.

Style meets substance in the age of cost-of-living

While aesthetics are important, practicality hasn’t gone out the window. With the cost of living continuing to bite, Aussies are searching for appliances that not only look good but also make life easier and cheaper.

High energy consumption is the number one appliance-related frustration for over half (51%) of Australians. This has led to a surge in demand for “high-value” appliances – those that seamlessly blend sleek design with smart, energy-saving features.

AI: The future of the smart, sustainable home

The report also reveals a growing appetite for AI-powered appliances. Australians are recognizing the potential of these smart devices to not only enhance their lives but also contribute to a more sustainable future.

Features like Samsung’s SmartThings Energy, which allows users to monitor and control energy consumption across multiple appliances, are bridging the gap between style and sustainability.

The bottom line

The Samsung Australians @ Home Report: 2024 Smart Living Edition paints a fascinating picture of our evolving relationship with household appliances. It’s no longer enough for them to simply function; they need to be stylish, smart, and sustainable. As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more innovative and integrated appliances that cater to our desire for a beautiful, efficient, and connected home.

  • The world is going mad with trends. Products with too many gadgets and features that we never get around to using. Over complicated and over priced. I could care less about the Jones’. Practicality all the way.

  • I’ve got to admit that although appearance wasn’t our main criteria, I was very sad when the red fridges did not come in the (giant) size we needed. I would have loved a red fridge in my kitchen! But yes, it’s generally not that hard to buy something that does the job but also looks good.

  • Just went appliance shopping for our new home – I can totally relate to this article

  • The joys of appliance shopping and knowing the pros and cons of them, ensuring they match, comparing the sustainability of them, having the right tech and so on. Samsung have nailed it all but im sure you pay the price for them. We’ve just built and getting the kitchen appliances was probably one of the harder things we had to decide on.

  • Lol, I don’t recognise myself in this article and are happy with appliances that work :)
The article says “A quarter (25%) of Aussies, and over a third (34%) of Gen Z, are more likely to host gatherings if they have a “fancy” fridge” and this really leaves me puzzled. I’m happy to invite people over the floor without having a fancy fridge for sure

    • I agree; I pay very little attention to the type, size or style of a fridge or any other appliance. I do like gadgets in the kitchen but a fridge really is a practical appliance for our kitchen. We are the same; family and friends can come over regardless of what we do or don’t have in our home. They are always more concerned about the possible yummy contents inside the fridge!

      • Haha yes ! It reminds me of a trip I once made to Central Asia. I travelled through a rural area in Kyrgyzstan and we were invited by a rural tribe of nomads, living in their cleverly made yurds. They ran out to see us and welcomed us with a smile and presented us with the most yummie handbaked bread. They were very poor people and hardly had a thing but the warmth they welcomed us with stays forever with me.

  • Thankfully, I have never ever had house or appliance envy. I have never ever had the need or urge to compare what I have in my home to anyone else. A fridge is a practical and functional appliance and our fridge keeps on going and going and doing its job year after year.

  • I am really loving these and how amazing would it be to have these in your house. I am sure these are very expensive and not in everyone’s price range. I do disagree with the comment made saying “it is key to making to creating core memories” I think this is a bit over the top!

  • Oh my goodness, the sage and dark green cabinetry are gorgeous!! The black appliances would look beautiful beside that colour. Which, imo, is the new luxe symbol. Black fridges, washing machines and dryers, it’s the new stainless steel (I’ll just take an upgrade of any, please haha). We try to get energy efficient models, it’s worth it in the long run.
