Dayna Sly had no idea she was pregnant when she jetted off to Florida on the trip of a lifetime with her fiancé earlier this month.

But last week as Hurricane Milton struck, the NSW woman went into labour, giving birth to a surprise baby girl in her hotel room.

Dayna explained that she didn’t have a baby bump or any morning sickness, and despite having some issues when she came off the contraceptive pill, doctors thought she had polycystic ovary syndrome.

“I had absolutely no idea and really had no symptoms,” she said.

So went she went into labour at 5am in their Orlando hotel room during the hurricane, she had no idea what was happening.

“We were inside, we were all bunkered down, trying to stay safe,” Dayna told 9News.

“I [felt] really bloated, going to go to the bathroom, I took a laxative.”

Baby Audrey was born the bathroom, while Dayna’s fiancé Tony slept in the bedroom.

“When I first woke up I thought, ‘This is the weirdest dream ever’,” he said. “Good morning, you’re a dad.”

With no power and the elevators not working, paramedics had to stretcher the new mum down four flights of stairs before taking her to hospital, where baby Audrey was given a clean bill of health.

“I can’t believe how well she’s doing, considering some of the stuff mum was doing like going on rides and on a plane at 41 weeks pregnant,” Dayna told Weekend Today.

But now the new parents have to navigate the red tape involved with getting the daughter home.

“We’ve got travel insurance, thank God, but the main concern is trying to get back to Australia,” Dayna said.

“She’s technically got an American birth certificate and at the moment we’ve been trying to contact the Australian authorities and we were jumping through some hoops yesterday just to get some help.”

  • How amazing and how scary. I hope all is well.

  • It would have been scary but exciting at the same time to find out you’re actually having a baby. The fact that she was able to do this alone was a miracle in itself given what she’d been doing previously. Congratulations to them both. I just hope the Australian Embassy gave them all the help they needed to get back home safe and sound.

  • What a story! I know every pregnancy is different and some babies aren’t wrigglers but surely you can feel a baby kicking inside, and if you haven’t been pregnant before, freaking out at that sensation. Ive always wondered about when a baby is born in a country they aren’t residing in. Does it automatically make them a citizen of that country?

  • It is amazing how often that mothers are unaware they are pregnant and no doctor or other person picks it up either. Surely if weight gain is going on and you are not eating any differently one would possibly [your doctor at least] to have a test to see if you were. The worse thing about all this is the red tape everyone has to jump over to bring this lovely bundle of joy home to Australia. Good luck and congratulations.

  • I’ve always wondered how women don’t realise they’re pregnant

  • That is truly an extraordinary story! I understand from other reports that they’re havig some issues getting a passport for the baby, but you’d think the Australian consulate should be able to help with at least a temporary one. It’s good they have travel insurance though – the US medical system is scary expensive.

  • Wow! That’s certainly an amazing story to tell bubs when she’s older. Just as well they had travel insurance. I bet the provider wouldn’t be expecting that though! I wonder if the hospital bill would have been as much considering she didn’t give birth in the hospital? Now they just need to do a lot of shopping!

  • What a beautiful little surprise that would have been. So glad all went well for them and Baby Audrey is thriving. Now what a headache they have dealing with trying to get this little bundle of joy home. Im sure all will work out well for them, its just going to take time.

  • I always thought these kinds of stories couldn’t be real but my third baby was a complete surprise! I wasn’t quite as far along as 41 weeks but was 28wks when I found out. And I didn’t look pregnant – just a bit bloated. I had no other symptoms and because I have pcos and was perimenopausal I just assumed that was why my periods were funky! It was really only because I had a dream that I was pregnant that I thought to even do a test. It was quite a shock to everyone including our 8 and 11 year olds!! But our now 21month old is just the most perfect little darling and addition to our lives. I can’t imagine life without her now.

  • I am always so surprised when I hear about or read stories of people not knowing they are pregnant and then deliver a surprise baby. The baby has most certainly been born at a memorable time and it is good to know they are getting support with the arrival of their surprise baby.

    • Audrey is such a lovely name and this little baby will have a wonderful birth story to retell when she is grown into an adult. Hopefully there is a lot of support from friends and family that will no doubt be as equally surprised and delighted with the arrival of a new baby.

  • Omg what a story, i am shocked how she did not know she is pregnant , but i am hapoy what a beautiful surprise they got❤️and all things went well

    • It really is an amazing story, who would have thought that you could go that long without realising you were pregnant? Did she not wonder when she body would have changed? I hope they can get everything sorted and be able to travel back to Australia, I am sure the red tape is causing a lot of grief for them during what should be a magical time.

      • I had to Google what “the red tape involved means”, lol. So in this context Use the phrase red tape when you’re talking about something that takes much longer than it should and involves more procedures, forms, or rules than make sense. That makes sense. The fact that the baby has an American birth certificate, certainly will complicate things.

  • Oh my goodness, what a story ! Mind you not knowing you’re pregnant and going on a flight, going on rides at 41 weeks pregnant and then giving birth to a baby in the bathroom after taking laxative because you feel bloated ! I can’t imagine the feeling of overwhelm and surprise they must have exerienced. Thank God all went well !

  • Wow I have heard of this before where someone didn’t know they were pregnant, for me my belly was too big not to know but i guess it can happen? This is very interesting as i have read a story before about this happening. I am just gobbed smacked she had no idea!

    • Some people don’t show much. Whith my first pregnancy many people didn’t notice I was pregnant and I could wear all my normal clothes. This lady must have had a very easy pregnancy, but the fact that the doctors didn’t pick it up and thought she had polycystic ovary syndrome, makes me wonder.

  • Omg what, she gave birth to her first baby *by herself* in the bathroom!?? What a super mum. There’s no way my husband could have slept through it, I wasn’t quiet at all haha. How wonderful that mum and bub are doing well. I hope dfat can get a passport arranged quickly, I’m sure there is a lot of friends and family back home who can’t wait to meet this surprise Bubba.
