An eight-year-old Western Australian boy who was left with horrific injuries after a quad bike accident in Bali has been airlifted to Australia, but remains in a coma.

Josh Schuetz was on the island with family and friends to compete in a football tournament, when the tragedy unfolded last week.

Close family friend Bernice (BJ) Ariasa, who was also in Bali, said the accident was ‘unimaginable’.

“Joshy had the most unimaginable accident … while quad biking in Ubud in Bali just days before the tournament we all came here for,” she explained on a GoFundMe appeal, which has raised more than $100,000.

She told 9News that the quad bike Josh was riding with his older brother flipped.

“They had helmets on, they weren’t going fast, it was a supposedly safe environment to be in.

“He sustained a fractured skull and brain bleed and was taken to hospital. Hospital in Bali is extremely expensive. To be looked at his parents needed to transfer $20,000 AUD deposit on the spot for just half of the bill.

“He was then transferred to another hospital with a neurosurgeon and ICU unit where they have to pay a further $10,000 AUD deposit for a blood transfusion. So far the bill is $60,000 AUD but climbing by the hour that he is in hospital here. Insurance is only covering medical evacuation (a huge help) but not the hospital costs. He has had surgery last night and the cost of this is unknown. He is in stable condition but in a coma.”

Bernice has since provided an update, after receiving ‘horrendous, abusive emails’.

“The family had top cover for all six travellers with unlimited hospital cover, but like all of us they didn’t read the fine print and assumed they were covered while abroad all inclusive. The insurance would not cover medical expenses due to the fact it happened on a quad bike.”

Josh is now back in Australia after a team of doctors and nurses helped transport him to Perth. Bernice said while he’s still in a coma, Josh is breathing independently, which is a ‘huge milestone’.

BJ says a team of Australian doctors and nurses are on their way to airlift Josh to Perth.

“We want Joshy to be back to normal so we want to help him get there in whatever way possible. Hundreds of prayers are over our sweet, funny, full of life Joshy. We just want him safe and healed.”

  • I wish Josh all the best for a full recovery. Accidents happen but it’s worse when they are overseas. Sending healing prayers to Josh and big hugs to his parents. Hope all goes well and he’s out and about in the near future.

  • Accidents can happen when out and about enjoying travel and activities. We also found that insurance does not include all activities and reading the fine print is so very important. A good recovery is wished for this young boy and hopefully the family receive support from those that matter around them.

  • Absolutely heartbreaking story. I can only imagine what the parents and family are going through. Wishing Josh a speedy recovery and hopeful that he’s able to go home for Christmas. In relation to insurance, you get to know exactly what your insurance company is like when you put a claim in. If there’s even a minute loophole not to pay out they’ll find it. Read the small print but it’s buried in gobble de gook that’s not clear to the average traveller to understand and that’s where they get you. Shame on them.

  • An accident is an accident. I don’t know what is wrong with people who love to troll people going through the hardest challenges in their lives. Insurance companies are well versed in tricking people with fine print too. Yes, in hindsight, things might have been done differently, but if they’re being trolled because they allowed their little boy to do a fun activity and something bad happened that’s awful as there is risk in everything you do.

  • How awful they received these horrendous and abusive emails !
It’s very sad that the family thought they had top cover for all six travellers with unlimited hospital cover, but didn’t read the fine print well and assumed they were covered while abroad all inclusive, whilst the insurance would not cover medical expenses due to the fact it happened on a quad bike.

  • Poor family. These insurance companies are con artists! This poor family needs help and I bet the CEO is sitting there in his penthouse having a laugh. Hope this sweet boy wakes up soon <3

  • Accidents do happen, but they’re so much worse if you’re overseas at the time. It just makes everything harder.

  • I would really love to read or hear an update about Josh ! And if he is still stable and made any progress and if they were able to transport him to Perth yet ! The medical evacuation should occur as soon as possible to reduce the massive financial stress on this family and for them to be able to receive direct support from family & friends.

  • Oh this is devastating. That poor family and those medical costs are HUGE we are so lucky here in Australia with out health system. What is amazing to see is the generosity of people on the go fund me page. At least thst will take away so much worry about the financial aspects.

    • We are indeed extremely fortunate in Australia to have a medical system that delivers care for people without astronomical costs. It truly is heartbreaking for any parent to endure the outcome of an accident and to navigate the medical system and possible financial costs. It is a very difficult and a tough time.

  • BAli sounds incredibly dangerous at the moment, and I’m not convinced the medical care is worth what they charge for it either.

  • Aw bless, that sounds like a horrifying and terrifying accident !
A farctured skull and brain bleed sounds quite serious, but promising to hear that he is stable ! Praying he pulls through and they will succeed to airlift him to Perth.
Those medical costs in Bali are crazy !! I’ve heard that some government-run medical facilities in Bali charge foreigners 500% more than local rates.

  • This is just dreadful. I’m so glad they can bring him closer to home and I just hope there is a wonderful outcome for him. Life is so precious and we never no what will happen any day.

  • I heard about this on the news, what a sad and terrifying story for the boy and his family. It is great to hear that doctors and nurses are on there way to see him and hopefully bring him back to Australia where he will get all the necessary care possible. That poor family must be beside themselves with worry. A parents worse nightmare.

  • I read this news this morning and my heart absolutely aches for this family. I really hope Josh’s brother doesn’t feel responsibility for what happened, this sounds like a horrible accident. I hope nothing more than to hear very soon that he will be okay and is recovering well at home.
