Australia’s most popular baby names for 2022 have been unveiled and for the first time in seven years, there’s a new queen in town!

Charlotte has finally been dethroned as the top girls’ baby name in Australia, replaced by Isla, which has risen from fourth position last year. But the top of the pops for the boys remains unchanged for the ninth consecutive year, with Oliver remaining the most popular boys’ name in Australia.

Each year every Australian state and territory releases the names of every baby born in the nation, and McCrindle crunches all of the data to uncover the most popular monikers and rare treasures hidden among the long lists. This year they’ve found that Millennial parents are opting for unique girl names, but sticking to a more traditional route for boys.

New kids on the block

Along with a new top girls’ name, there’s been a fair bit of shuffling in this year’s top 100 girls’ baby names. Almost half of the girls’ names didn’t even feature in the top 100 in 2010, and the same goes for a third of the boys’ names.

Some of the most popular girls’ names that have sprung into the top 100 over the past decade include Hazel, Florence, Daisy, Frankie, Luna, Ayla, Sadie, Billie, Millie, Aurora and Mila.

While on the boys’ side of the ledger, Theodore, Hudson, Arlo, Archer, Harvey, Carter, Arthur, Sonny and Asher have made their debut in the last 10 years.

Up and coming baby names

There are also some interesting baby names making a name for themselves (pardon the pun) and gaining in popularity. Mila debuted in the top 100 2019 with a bullet at number 35, and is now at 19.

Remi is another name on the rise, after debuting at 73 in 2020 it’s now at 60th position, while Delilah has gone from 96th last year to 71st.

Baby boy names on the rise include Arthur, Ari, Ezra, River, Theo, Billy, and Luka.

Short and sweet

In Australia the trend seems to be with giving babies shorter first names. Which makes sense – we love a good shortened nickname! Here’s a look at some of the shortened names that are more popular than their longer version:

  • Jack (3rd) outranks Jackson (59th)
  • Leo (6th) outranks Leonardo (93rd)
  • Archie (13th) outranks Archer (28th)
  • Eli (52nd) outranks Elias (99th)
  • Ella (10th) outranks Isabella (15th) and Isabelle (40th)

Beautiful botanicals

Once again Aussie parents have shown their love for all things nature, with botanical names super popular, including Willow (8th), Lilly (13th), Ivy (14th), Violet (28th), Daisy (34th), Poppy (38th), Olive (68th) and Delilah (71st).

  • Quinn is nice…but suits a boy more than a girl.

    • See I feel it suits a girl more than boy. Maybe because I watch One Tree hill and there is a girl names Quinn in it. 🙂

  • Glad my bubs names aren’t too common!
Nothing worse than calling out a name in the playground and having 10 other kids turn around.
