The supermarket spending habits of Aussies have been revealed, and it’s no surprise that we’re forking out more for our average weekly shopping.

Latest Canstar Blue research shows Australians are spending an average of $168 on groceries in 2024, compared to $160 per week last year. And that’s 10% more than we were spending in 2022.

The average weekly shop for households of five or more people is around $232, with most of that money going towards everyday food items. Here’s a breakdown of where we’re spending our weekly grocery budget:

  • Fresh fruits & vegetables: 63%
  • Dairy/eggs: 56%
  • Bakery items (i.e. bread): 56%
  • Meat/seafood/deli items: 51%
  • Pantry items (i.e. rice, pasta, cooking oil, etc.): 51%
  • Drinks (i.e. coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc.): 48%
  • Frozen foods: 44%

Interestingly, the research revealed that although we’re feeling the pinch at the checkout, Aussies are actually less price-driven than a year ago. We’re less likely to buy what’s on special or purchase supermarket-owned brands.

What is the average weekly grocery bill in each state?

According to this latest research, Queenslanders are footing the highest weekly grocery bills, followed by WA, NSW and Tasmania.

Of course, most of us with families would be spending well over that amount, so the research has also revealed the average weekly grocery bill in Australia by household size.

  • The price of items is really shocking lately and I wonder how young families can get by.

  • I spend on average $300 one big shop for two weeks. Plus also two or three $70.00 shops as well during the week. Shopping for 4 people. I can’t understand why it costs me more to eat healthy. But if I eat unhealthy and I could get $5 pizza. Explain how far this is. When I move house my whole family said get enough room for a green house as soon we won’t be able to afford vegetables. They are right that’s the sad thing.

  • I think we spend more than that per week. Can be anything from about $120 to about $250 on my main shop but it doesn’t include the amounts spent at other supermarkets during the week to grab what’s on special there or the little extras throughout the week (top ups and necessary items for meals for that night). I honestly think our average grocery bill per week is closer to the $300 mark

  • I am spending that just for a family of 1 not 4 as I like fresh fruit and veg, cannot stand tinned or frozen and I shop between all the supermarkets to get what is the cheaper price between them [but not at Aldi as their fresh isn’t as fresh as I like it]. Do wish I could get the prices down and can only manage by skipping a meal per day.

  • The cost of living now is just terrible. When will the supermarkets help to make things a little easier for everyone

  • No surprise that Tasmania is one of the higher ones! I’m very surprised that Queensland is so expensive as I used to live in Brisbane and found that fruit, veg and meat could be found a lot cheaper, especially if you went to some of the discount butchers or independent grocers. The estimate above is pretty accurate for me in Tassie, but I will say I always shop the specials.

  • Well under, I have to shop every shop to get it too $230 a week for 3 people but that is eating fresh food not buying old food and cooking vegetables every dinner. Depends what people eat like if your eating pasta 2 nights a week and giving kids cereal for dinner plus buying old meat near the used by date then I’m sure I could get it too $192 a week for 3 people

  • Our family needs Gluten Free so add about another $100 a week for our family of four adults with daughters ASD and Coeluac with autoimmune cost of living is crushing.

  • Family of 4: some weeks average $215 – $260 (that could be an extremely large shop or its two separate shops in one day, depending on sales). Some weeks it can be $180 and occasionally $130. But I am actually buying less.

  • Yeah nah haha f

    • Yeah nah family of 6- 2 adults, a teen 3 lilttlies including a baby we definitely spend more than that! That’s probably our main week shop without meat, then the top up later in the week is between $50-100
It’s a constant conversation in our house

  • At $230 a week, we would be going without or sacrificing a few key items. If we were to buy what we needed each week it would be $350 minimum. And after that we are always going back every other day for something. It is so sad that even the basics are not affordable for families these days

  • Insane how much groceries have gone up causing a bigger expense for everyone

  • On average that’s $230 every few days , it’s basically buys you nothing now! It’s ridiculously priced

  • I’m a little above average. 230 for early week shop but then I always end up needed top ups the same week so would be more like 300 for us.

    • I have to agree, I end up going to the supermarket a couple of times a week. No matter how much i plan and try to only do one shop there is always something i need to top up or have forgotten to add to the main shopping list at the beginning of the week.

  • I am somewhat surprised that the research indicates that people do not buy specials. I am always on the lookout for specials and buying in bulk because it makes good economic sense. It always pays to do research and shop catalogues and get the best deals for food and groceries. I love the challenge of saving every week on the food and grocery budget.

  • Oh my goodness, I’m shocked people can survive on so little, and kind of embarrassed we spend so much ! With four of us eating vegetarian, 3 of us eating gluten free and one of us eating diary free we’re using about $ 550 per week ! that’s right per week

    • Some items have become so extremely expensive. You know I spend a $ 100 per week only on coffee and chewing gum ? We use fresh ground coffee brewed at home and I only drink decaf coffee (which is $ 11 a pack) whilst my husband drinks mostly with caffeine. We use about a pack of coffee a day

  • When my household was numbering 7 + 5 pets, I was able to spend 350 per fortnight on our grocery shop with a bumper of 100 for milk & bread (& forgotten items)

Now, with a household of three + 3 pets, I’m spending nearly 300 a week. I’m still just as thrifty, I still make 90% from scratch… it’s just becoming harder & harder to keep food on the table.

    • I am thrifty too and make meals and freeze them. It pays to plan meals and to cook meals in batches and then freeze them for later. It is a challenge to make the dollar stretch and get the best value from stores and shopping. It also pays to shop around at different stores and markets.

  • We spend this on food for 2 and it would be less if the supermarkets played fair but they don’t and it looks like nothing the government can do will change anything so put up and do the best you can it is better than being bombed but the pain still hurts

  • I think i would spend at least what you have on the chart plus maybe a bit more. Everything has gone up so much lately and then also shrinking in size too. Some weeks depending on what i have to buy, i can spend almost double but i have tried to get savvy and stock up on items when they are on sale in the hope that this will eventually bring my shopping costs down.

  • Yeah that sounds about right. Our weekly groceries are a bit more than that average, but I’m also feeding two teenage boys and a husband with allergies. If I didn’t have to allow for that (especially the teenagers) I’d say we’d come in at about $230 each week. I’m a little surprised!
