There are few things more satisfying to a new mum than knowing her tiny bundle is growing well and gaining enough weight. But, it’s not always easy to tell bub’s gains are on track, especially if breastfeeding difficulties arise, and this is where is baby scale is a godsend.

A baby scale is invaluable to new parents who are tracking weight gains closely and perhaps concerned about how much milk is actually being consumed. With simple operation and a clear display, it’s possible to gauge exactly where baby is at in mere seconds. Best of all, some scales grow with your bub, converting from a baby scale to a toddler and child scale for years of use. So handy.

To help you keep up to date with every extra bit of goodness bubba gains, we’ve scouted out the infant scales other Australian parents know and love.

How often should I weigh my baby?

The Australian guidelines are to weigh your baby every month up to the age of six months, every two months from 6-12 months and every three months after they turn one. Of course, in the early stages with a newborn, if you are concerned about breastmilk intake, you may want to weigh baby more often for peace of mind.

How do I know if my baby is gaining enough weight?

The World Health Organisation growth charts are your best source for knowing if your baby is on track with their weight gains. In summary, a baby’s birth weight typically doubles by the age of 4 months and triples by 15 months for girls and 15 months for boys.

Can I use bathroom scales to weigh my baby?

Regular bathroom scales definitely aren’t designed to be used by infants, so avoid this as an option. Baby scales come with a comfortable tray for little ones to lie down in and they’re also much more accurate at measuring tiny gains than adult scales.

Where can I get my baby weighed?

If you can’t get your hands on your own set of infant scales, you can always head to your local GP or Maternal and Child Health Nurse to weigh your baby.

  • We have the aquascale, so handy!

  • Wow. im stunned if people are buying these sort of things for at home or as baby shower gifts. If you had a multiple pregnancy of 3 or more then maybe or perhaps if you had a child with a health issue were gaining weight was a super importnat thing then ok

    Reply

  • I wouldn’t buy special ones for home. They aren’t small for long enough. Weigh your self then with the bub and calc the difference.

  • After reading this and the comments I will definitely be doing the weigh myself with and without Bub method ! Amazing as I’m always curious to know where we are at weight wise

    Reply

  • I never bought my own. I always could take my twins to the maternity ward or health and family nurses and use their scales.

    Reply

  • Quite fancy but lucky I didn’t need it.

    Reply

  • It’s nice to have the option of a variety of scales if you want to buy your own.
I never bought my own though, just waited for the maternal child health appointments and that was fine for us.

  • Some are quite pricey and others fit into the budget. The KMART Infant Scale will do me perfectly as babies are weighed at hospital and at clinic.
Some great choices for more of the pricey ones.

  • I don’t think everyone needs scales but nice to have options available to you should you not be able to access a doctor of health nurse easily.

    Reply

  • Great to see Kmart stocks these! Kmart has everything!

    Reply

  • For the price of these I don’t think it’s something you would personally need. I think it adds too much stress to be constantly weighing and worrying about babies weight.

    Reply

  • Good to be able to have a choice if you can’t get to the Dr or MCH

    Reply

  • I’m not sure this would be something that many households would need. You can weigh in at the maternal health check up. Alternatively you can weigh yourself, then hold bubs and weigh you both together, and deduct your weight.

  • Would only buy if I had problems. Thanks for doing all the leg-work on the various ones now out there though.

    Reply

  • These scales look great but not a necessity compared to other baby items. I just weigh with and without baby on regular scales.

    Reply

  • I don’t have any of these and don’t need them for now as my little one is turning 2 in 3 months and I think it’s useful for little babies only

    Reply

  • I have the Oricom scales and they are amazing. I love how I can use them when he gets older as well

    Reply

  • I normally weigh my self and then again while holding bub and record the difference.

    Reply

  • I would get obsessed with weighing my baby! Best to just wait till I do GP check ups

    Reply

  • This would be a great comfort to Mum’s who are worried their babies aren’t putting on the weight but at the same time, they would be putting pressure on themselves and start weighing their baby more often that is necessary. I just took my boys to the health nurse once a week to check on their progress.
