A custom-designed baby shower dress, featuring live gold fish in a bowl, has been slammed online, with claims of animal cruelty.

The mermaid-themed gown includes a half fish bowl attached at the tummy, filled with water and real fish. The fashion design label makes unique, custom gowns that it claims will make ‘every milestone memorable’.

The gown’s designer, Yanedaila, took to Instagram to defend her creation.

“Art is just Art. It’s not about who loves it and who doesn’t. One thing I’m passionate about is bringing my clients’ visions to life SEAMLESSLY and I DID THAT! If you knew me fr you’d know how much passion is behind anything I put my heart to and my hands on.

“Thank you to those who can appreciate ART and an ARTIST. And baby this was a one and done, I told my client idc if someone offered me a gazillion dollars.”

But videos of the eye-catching gown attracted thousands of comments from people incensed at the use of live animals for fashion.

“Y’all got to stop using wildlife as a prop,” one person commented. “That fish is going to be dead by the end of the night and that’s bad juju for the baby.”

“What was the point of using live fish? You could’ve easily bought fake fish, and I know for a fact it would’ve been cheaper,” wrote another.

While others went as far as claiming it was animal abuse: “This is absolute abuse, animals are NOT toys or accessories. God this is awful.”

The mother-to-be who wore the gown also shared images and video from her baby shower on Instagram, with lots of supporters congratulating the stunning expecting mum.

What do you think of this unique baby shower gown? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Fish need oxygen? Being in a sealed container is certainly not good for them. Hence why when you buy fish you get them home out of the bag quickly once adjusted to the temp of their new tank. If it had a oxygen pump built in it or open top it would be a different story but this does seem cruel.

  • This is horrible…

  • What an insane indulgence for a baby shower. And yes, it probably was very bad for the fish.

  • Wow, this outfit is ridiculous

  • This just seems really unnecessary to me….

  • This is definitely out there. Not sure this is a dress I would consider wearing. To me it is not really a baby shower dress but everyone has the right to do what they want and wear what they want. As long as she is not harming the gold fish, then that is all that matters.

  • It certainly is unique ! The fish can’t get oxygen so I don’t agree with the statement ***NO ANIMALS WERE HARMED***

  • Art still needs to be ethical.

    • Art is individual and the definition is wide; live animals in a costume is understandably always going to cause controversy.

  • I just dont see the purpose of having fish probably shaking around as she walked? They didnt deserve it.

  • Oh I hate this. They aren’t ‘just fish’. Sympathy lacks because fish are incapable of making sounds expressing their pain and fear. This is drawn out torture imo. I’m not a vegetarian or anything, I just don’t believe animals should be used for people’s vanity.
