We used to buy all our bread from Baker’s Delight. But then we discovered our local bakery was more than half the price of Baker’s Delight plus the loaves of bread from Woolies and Coles are also a fraction the cost of those from Baker’s Delight.

So I’m not surprised that two Bakers Delight stores will close in Darwin in the Northern Territory in June.

As reported in the Daily Mail, the closures were confirmed by Bakers Delight joint chief executive Elise Gillespie who said the company was shutting down franchises at Darwin City and Casuarina Square.

This follows another closure of the bakery chain outlet in Darwin’s CBD earlier this year.

Can’t Sustain Business

The reasons suggested for shutting the doors of these shops include a general downturn in the city’s economy.

‘Unfortunately, with the economic climate in Darwin, we haven’t been able to sustain businesses,’ Ms Gillespie told Newscorp.

‘Across bakeries in Darwin the last few years foot traffic has dropped quite considerably. We often make it through the wet season by what we achieve through the dry.’

The employees in the affected stores (about 10 – 20 people) will be supported by the company.

Ms Gillespie has reassured residents that if the economy turns around and we can find local franchisees and good sites that work from a lease perspective, absolutely we’d consider returning to Darwin.

Baker’s Delight, was originally established in Victoria in 1980 and now has outlets in over 700 locations across the world.

  • I must admit I never bought bread from Baker’s Delight. I just buy it in Coles.

  • I do like to grab the occasional loaf when we are having a nice tea but don’t normally go out of my way.

  • I don’t buy from them but I have a good reason. I’m not willing to drive 200km for a loaf of bread. It’s a pity they can’t drop their prices to compete with other stores. Hope things turn around for them

  • Nooo that sux. Their cheese and chive scones are great and the tiger loaf is wonderful.. Agree they are tad expensive though.

  • Such a shame. Their cape seed loaves are amazing! It is hard to justify spending that much on a loaf of bread though.

  • It’s a wonderful store but definitely pricey

  • I used to as I really loved their grain breads, but it is so much more expensive than our local bread shop [no franchisee] and Coles and Woolworths are also giving good bread made on their premises at a fraction of the cost. I feel sorry for the franchisees who just can’t make a profit with these shops these days.

  • I used to as their bread has more natural ingredients but it is expensive. It is sliced at the thickness you want. However their fruit loaf has the questionable ingredients that other places have in their bread.

  • My Dad will only eat this bread and while I’m not as fussy I have to admit it does taste very nice.

  • What a shame for the staff but I can see why they would find it hard to stay open.

  • My oldest daughter loves the white chia bread from Bakers Delight for her school sandwiches so I do go there. Also my kids and I love the crusty cob with butter on it. They do have tastier bread than other places.

  • Misleading headline. It’s only two stores in Darwin. The title Implys that it’s all stores

  • love the fresh bread, sad about this

  • all these chain stores aren’t sustainable with the number they have – reduce the locations and keep the quality then you’ll get people travelling to buy!

  • They have fantastic tasting bread but they are quite expensive for bread. I do normally buy from them or my local bakery.
