Barbie has launched a history-making collaboration with basketball star LeBron James, making him the first professional male athlete to have his likeness depicted as a Ken doll.

Barbie has teamed up with the LeBron James Family Foundation to release the doll, in recognition of the basketballer’s positive impact on culture, style and community.

Ahead of Barbie’s 65th anniversary next year, the brand is honouring Kenbassadoars, who are inspiring and contributing to a better world.

“Ken is Barbie’s longtime best friend and supporter,” Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls, Mattel Krista Berger said. “We are excited to bring fans a new presentation of Ken that celebrates LeBron as a role model, his icon status, lasting impact on culture, and dedication to setting a positive example for the next generation to reach their limitless potential.”

“As a young kid, I was fortunate to have role models who not only inspired me but also showed me what’s possible through hard work and dedication,” LeBron James said.

“Now, as an adult, I understand how vital it is for young people to have positive figures to look up to. That’s why partnering with Barbie to release the LeBron James Kenbassadors doll is such an honor. It’s an opportunity to recognise the powerful impact of role models who instil confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids that they, too, can achieve greatness.”

The LeBron James doll includes features:

  • LeBron is styled in fresh fits like a bomber jacket with his iconic number “23”, tailored checkered pants, and statement sneakers.
  • Sunglasses, a fanny pack, bracelet, and a pair of headphones in his hand polish off his outfit.
  • He is proudly representing his non-profit — the LeBron James Family Foundation — with a crisp “WE ARE FAMILY” t-shirt, logo on his hat, and varsity jacket patch.

You’ll have to be quick to get your hands on one of these dolls before they sell out. They’re available from Mattel for $135.

  • I’ve never thought of dolls being role models – but agree that is can promote public figures who have had a positive impact. Not sure that this would be a kids play toys, more likely a collectors doll I imagine.

  • I suspect adult collectors will buy the doll and keep it in the box for display. Collectors keep dolls in boxes to hold the value of them and often the box is appealing because of the design and the information. Children will no doubt rip the box open and happily play with the doll.

  • That’s a very good likeness to Lebron but it’s certainly not a child’s toy to be played with. This is definitely for collectors only. It’s great that they are making more dolls that depict real people and hopefully some of the money they get for these dolls go to a charity or two. Well done

  • I was having dinner out last night, and heard the people at the table next to me talking about this doll! (They were so loud the entire restaurant probably heard.) Although I couldn’t pay this price for a “play with” doll, it’s probably not so insane if you’re a collector or a huge fan.

  • I was indeed wondering who would gift this doll as a toy to their child considering the price to be quite expensive, but you make a good point and collectors and maybe fans of LeBron James would love this indeed. It’s a great looking doll and clearly lots of attention to detail has been made.

  • Dolls can be hit and miss at times with appearance; however there seems to be quite a great deal of skill and talent in the design of this doll. The doll has a good likeness and detail of LeBron James. This doll will no doubt be a popular doll and purchase for fans of LeBron and basketball.

  • Wow! That’s actually a pretty good likeness and I love the outfit. The t-shirt featuring his not for profit foundation is a very nice touch as well. At $135 it’s probably a bit expensive to be used for a kids toy but I’m sure it’ll make a few collectors very happy.

  • I actually think this is pretty cool. I mean we keep hearing about new celebrities being immortalised by Barbie, but it’s always women. It is good to see a man being represented here. I am not sure how popular it will be as Ken was never as popular, but who knows, maybe?

  • I’m feeling a bit embarrassed but I have never heard of LeBron James; That being said I am not into sports or watching television. I can imagine this is a true honor for LeBron James in which his positive example and impact on others is celebrated. The doll looks really amazing

  • I am astonished how real this looks. It truely is amazing what can be created these days. I personally wouldn’t buy this but I am sure there are people out there who would love it. $135 is quite expensive but I guess for those who really want one, will pay that price.

  • I love this. Lebron is such an icon and deserves this first. I love his book, I Promise. It has such amazing qualities and purpose in its pages and I hope my little guy enjoys hearing it as he grows. Lebron continues to do so much for his community, a legend.

  • Wow thats a real thing!? Im sure some collectors would absolutely love owning this. It doesnt appeal to me at all, but still, how cool is it to have Mattel create a barbie version of you. I have to say, they did a brilliant job and i think nailed the overall look.

  • It’s lucky I don’t want one – that’s quite the price tag for a Barbie doll! I support the principle of celebrating male role models as well as female, it’s just I couldn’t pay that for a doll. Plus I don’t really know much about LeBron, so my care factor is quite low.
