It’s finally happening! The first-ever animated Bluey feature film is officially in the works, and set to hit cinemas across the globe in 2027.

The highly-anticipated announcement from BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company has sent fans into a frenzy … but it’s been tinged with sadness after Bluey creator Joe Brumm also made his own ‘trifficult’ announcement.

What do we know about the Bluey movie?

First, the good news! The Bluey film will premier in cinemas worldwide in 2027 (yep, that’s a long wait!), and will then be streamed on Disney+, and also ABC iview and ABC in Australia.

Written and directed by Joe Brumm, the CG animated Bluey movie will feature the same vocal actors from the series including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, and will include music created by Bluey composer Joff Bush.

“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” Bluey creator Joe Brumm said.

“I’ve always thought ‘Bluey’ deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new ‘Bluey’ story to the big screen.”

So, what’s the trifficult news?

Along with the exciting Bluey film announcement, there’s been some news from Bluey creator Joe Brumm.

The Australian animator, director and writer said after spending time away from the Bluey series, he wrote the Bluey feature script, which he ‘really’ loves. But he also explained that he’s always maintained he wouldn’t keep making the show if he felt he couldn’t make each new season as good as the last.

“This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series,” Joe explained.

“In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such.”

He continued: “Bluey has completely changed my life. It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words. To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six year old world and write authentically.”

But Joe was quick to point out that it’s not the end for the supremely popular Bluey TV series.

“To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film.”

  • My daughter was so excited to hear there is a Bluey movie coming. We have recently really gotten into Bluey. Any kid who loves watching the tv series is going to love the movie when it is released. Even us big kid s (adults). I reckon it’s going to be the most popular movie of the year when released.

  • The series has been very well liked and not just by Australian audiences as the series has been sold world-wide. I am sure the movie will be a hit as well as everyone is looking forward to seeing it and it’s great that it is being released over the school holidays – great way to have some respite in the cinema over the Christmas break.

  • This is great for the australian entertainment economy, we should believe stronger on products that we produce for kids, because they are awesome and should share it with the rest of the world. Kids loves Bluey and it is quite educational which nowadays is very hard to find with quality.

  • I don’t know, part of the charm of Bluey is the short episodes. Maybe a movie would stretch the story too far?

  • It is kinda cool that this humble children’s cartoon has really put Australia on the map, like The Wiggles, and I love how it really expresses within it Australia’s unique culture. From what I have heard there is great examples of our humour within each episode. I’m sure there are a lot of really excited kiddies!

  • I’ve never watched a series of Bluey and have no reason to either. My boys are adults and I don’t get to see my Great Grandsons as they live too far away for me to visit so we just Skype. I’m glad that it’s going to keep going although sad that Joe Brumm won’t be involved. All the best for the movie.

  • I can’t wait for the movie. I just hope my little one is still into Bluey by then (I’m sure that’s the case, but kids change their minds so quickly) If not, it looks like a solo trip to the movies for mum. We love everyone but Bingo is our favourite… this week…

  • I love all of this and totally ‘get it’ …. this also is him taking care of himself as well as the project that has changed his life….ensuring it remains authentic. I adore Bluey, for the humour, the asides, the colour palette, the games that we copy, and the 80s references…. and that’s me, a mum of 3 kids under 10 in her 50s. You rock Joe, and so does Bluey!

  • Bluey is such a big hit in our household and has been for the past 5 years.
It brings us happiness, laughter and even tears but we all are able to sit down and enjoy it. We are definitely excited for a movie, we’re just waiting impatiently already. C’mon Bluey!

  • Bluey sure does deserve a movie. The Heeler family are all super stars! 2027 sounds so far away, however it’ll be here before we know it. Bluey has been one of the great kids (& family) shows of recent years & will continue to have far reaching effects in Australia and overseas

  • That’s great news but sad that we have to wait so long. The suspense lol. My grandsons are 9 & 7 and still love the show and the new minisodes.
My husband was in the front lounge room with his mate watching cricket the other night when we heard the Bluey music. Cricket was washed out so they were catching up on new episodes lol.
