It’s finally happening! The first-ever animated Bluey feature film is officially in the works, and set to hit cinemas across the globe in 2027.

The highly-anticipated announcement from BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company has sent fans into a frenzy … but it’s been tinged with sadness after Bluey creator Joe Brumm also made his own ‘trifficult’ announcement.

What do we know about the Bluey movie?

First, the good news! The Bluey film will premier in cinemas worldwide in 2027 (yep, that’s a long wait!), and will then be streamed on Disney+, and also ABC iview and ABC in Australia.

Written and directed by Joe Brumm, the CG animated Bluey movie will feature the same vocal actors from the series including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, and will include music created by Bluey composer Joff Bush.

“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” Bluey creator Joe Brumm said.

“I’ve always thought ‘Bluey’ deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new ‘Bluey’ story to the big screen.”

So, what’s the trifficult news?

Along with the exciting Bluey film announcement, there’s been some news from Bluey creator Joe Brumm.

The Australian animator, director and writer said after spending time away from the Bluey series, he wrote the Bluey feature script, which he ‘really’ loves. But he also explained that he’s always maintained he wouldn’t keep making the show if he felt he couldn’t make each new season as good as the last.

“This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series,” Joe explained.

“In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such.”

He continued: “Bluey has completely changed my life. It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words. To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six year old world and write authentically.”

But Joe was quick to point out that it’s not the end for the supremely popular Bluey TV series.

“To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film.”

  • It’s so lovely to read about success stories, especially one at the global scale Bluey has hit. It’s so wonderful for the creator, all that hard work. I hope there are some Aussie guests voices that make an appearance, that would be fun. By the time it comes out my little guy will be able to enjoy movies so we’ll have to make a day out of it.

  • This had to occur and should be a fabulous success. Perhaps then a musical?!

What great reflection and insights from Joe! If only now people knew when to step back. The addoge of ‘always leave the party while you’re having a great time’ reflects great wisdom for us all to follow.

    • I agree with your comment and it is so important to be authentic and to to brave enough in life to take a new direction. It is important to continue being creative and if that means moving on to something new and creative then it is a good direction to follow.
