Popular teething and mouth ulcer gel Bonjela is set to be pulled from supermarket shelves within weeks.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has reclassified teething products such as Bonjela Mouth Ulcer & Teething Gel, which contain choline salicylate, as a Scheduled 2 medicine, meaning it will only be available in pharmacies.

The change will come into effect from October 1, 2023. It follows concerns that if products containing choline salicylate aren’t used as directed (too frequently or over a long period of time) it can lead to overdose toxicity.

“Choline salicylate is an ingredient in a number of teething products such as Bonjela Teething Gel. Other products for the relief of pain, inflammation and discomfort associated with mouth ulcers/sores and new dentures or braces also contain choline salicylate,” explained a spokesperson for the TGA.

“Substances in Schedule 2 may require advice from a pharmacist for safe use, which should be available from a pharmacy or, where a pharmacy service is not available, from a licensed person.

“The therapeutic guidelines in Australia do not recommend teething gels (irrespective of choline salicylate content) because of the lack of evidence of efficacy and the potential for harm.”

  • I used this on my youngest son when he was teething. He’s now 40, so it just goes to show how long it took them to realise it could be harmful.

  • I never used this on my babies, but my husband used it as false teeth often caused an ulcer.

  • Wow! I just bought a tube recently for myself to get rid of ulcers.

  • Its a shame people can’t read instructions I guess… A warning on the label should be enough surely…

  • Important to not missuse or overuse it indeed.

  • It makes sense – people should be getting advice on how to use it properly

    • I agree, keeping everyone informed and aware of changes and information about products is so important for health.

  • They have to cover themselves. Could be potent if used in higher than recommended doses for days at a yime

  • Wow that’s a shame and an inconvenience to people who need it late at night or last minute. Surely the instructions on the packaging lets people know how to use it and the warnings.

    • I agree.
It shouldn’t be needed to take it off the supermarket shelves and take away the responsibility of those who buy it on how to use it.
It’s like treating adults like little children.
Everybody gets punished for the ignorance of some.

  • Wow that’s going to be inconvenient for many. Most people know to only use a small amount and the instructions are on the packet.

  • This is a real shame and I honestly think a really bad move. Having it available at supermarkets can be so much easier as you can purchase it with your shopping without having to go to another store. I think they will regret this decision.

  • Bit sad that something that’s helped teething babies for many years is being taken off supermarket shelves just because a few don’t use it as recommended

  • Seems a bit silly. They’ll probably charge more for it too.

  • A good idea to seek advice from a pharmacist and show due care when using these products.
