Hello!

They’ve been a mainstay of community fundraising for more than a quarter of a century, but Bunnings sausage sizzles haven’t been without their controversy. And now there’s a new bun fight unfolding.

From slippery onions to price increases, the much-loved Bunnings barbecue has copped its fair share of flack. But the beloved Bunnings sausage sizzles have become an iconic part of any weekend trip to the hardware giant.

Raising funds for sporting groups, community organisations and charities, the sausage sizzles offer the chance to make some coin by only outlaying for the sauces, drinks, sausages and bread. But here’s where the latest controversy comes in.

Bunnings is now encouraging the use of sliced bread, rather than bread rolls. And some aren’t happy.

“[We] encourage community groups hosting a sausage sizzle to serve sausages in slices of bread to ensure our offer is consistent as possible across all stores,” Bunnings said in a statement.

But callers to Ben Fordham Live were quick to voice their disappointment.

“The slices of bread are way too soggy when you put your mustard and onion and sauce on,” caller Sandy said.

“If you want two sausages, you get to pay more and that goes back into the community.”

While Seb asked why groups couldn’t just provide both options. “Give me one of each mate.”

Personally, I’ve only ever purchased Bunnings snags in bread. What about you? Let us know in the comments below.

  • It’s a sausage in bread!

  • Even Bluey has a slice of bread. Ergo, that is the standard.
Plus, how does anyone make money while buying buns?

  • I’ve never seen them in bread rolls before and I prefer them in bread anyway. It’s just the right amount of bread to sausage. Otherwise it would need 2 sausages per roll to get the right ratio. It wouldn’t be an original Bunnings sausage sizzle if bread isn’t used.

  • Must admit I have never seen buns or rolls at a Bunnings sausage sizzle yet. I always thought it was cheaper for the charity to have bread and then they made more profit from their stall.

  • Ive never seen them in buns but i think sandwich bread is better less bread more sausage.

  • pretty sure we have only seen bread slices at the Bunnings sausage sizzle

  • I’ve honestly never seen rolls at bunnings? But honestly I don’t think it matters either way when youre supporting a good cause..

  • Personally I would rather eat sandwich bread than a roll, I don’t want to eat that much bread that is in a roll

  • I’ve never seen a sausage sizzle with rolls yet and I’ve lived in 3 states… I would love to see them in rolls if price still similar.

  • As a volunteer at many a bunnings sizzle in far north Qld I have never seen a bbq offer a hot dog roll. Bunnings dont list it as an option in the paperwork. Unless the organisation has them donated, it would be more expensive for the organisation therefore less profit. If made to offer the two options how do you gauge how much of one over another you would sell? Organisations would be left with more left over breads at the end of the day which in turn means less profit made. When the BBQ runs from early AM to 4pm and you’ve volunteered whole day, it would be nice to make the best possible profit you can. If you have buns, good on you, but dont make it that both must be offered. It wont work everywhere. I can see why they want consistency across all stores but maybe different states could have slightly different regulations?

  • I’ve only ever seen sausage sandwiches on bread, not in buns. Buns are for hotdogs lol.

  • I’m pretty sure that the general public is smart enough to realise that the groups who are fundraising may get rolls donated sometimes instead of bread. Surely we can adapt.

    • I agree; a better use of resources and less waste too.

  • Would love a Bunnings sausage sizzle in a roll. Less mess and more filling for the same price. Win – Win

  • Here in WA it’s usually sausage in a bread roll same way I make them at home. Main reason being less mess and bread tends to get a bit soggy. Wouldn’t buy one if it was in a slice of bread.

  • I’ve never been to a Bunnings where they sell sausages in bread rolls but I’m all for it.

  • i don’t buy these from bunnings but that is because i am very picky with what sausages i like to eat. Why can’t they offer a couple of varieties. Why does it have to be one size fits all. Come on – we are in 2024, surely having a couple of options isn’t that big of a deal, there are bigger things worth worrying about than this!

  • As vegetarian I never bought one or have observed what type of bread rolls/slices they use :)

  • I hate the thought that it’s for consistency. I got a Bunnings snag last week at our local on the sunny coast, the guys there had sourced the sausages from a local butcher. They said they wanted to support local business rather than the big two. It was the best sausage sizzle ever. I hate to think that Bunnings would turn their nose at this because you don’t get the same quality at the next store.
I would love the option of a roll in stead of bread. If the charity/group wants to give the customer a better experience, let them.
