The Bunnings Sausage Sizzle has reached almost cult-like status for its loyal patrons but many shoppers are up in arms that their beloved tradition is being messed up with a distinctly meat-free, vegan sausage sizzle.

A Bunnings store in Rockingham, WA has rocked the boat by announcing a charity vegan sausage sizzle, selling only snags made of bean and pea puree.

The special meatless event has been planned for 19 March to help raise funds for Greyhounds Adoption WA.

All money will go toward re-homing former racing greyhounds and was designed to encourage ‘tolerance and acceptance’, a spokesperson for Greyhounds Adoption WA told 9News.

However, it seems the event is causing just the opposite, with disgruntled fans saying that the veggie Bunning’s sausage sizzle may keep customers away.

“Typical vegans. Always shoving things down our throat that we don’t wanna eat. Not everyone wants your way of eating/life,” one critic ranted.

“They’re just pleasing the two million [Australian] vegans and ignoring the other 22 million who eat meat.”

One shopper at the hardware store said the idea of a vegan Bunnings Sausage Sizzle was unAustralian but would be prepared to give the bean alternative a go.

“I don’t think you should be forcing people to have it, but it should be an option,” he added.

Not All Bad

However, it’s not all doom and gloom and some shoppers are applauding the controversial initiative.

‘It doesn’t make sense to raise funds to save kangaroos, koalas and greyhounds but then turn around and eat other animals,’ one woman said.

The organisers of the event say that customers won’t be able to tell the difference with the meat-free alternative.
