Dads may get access 20 weeks of paid parental leave, under a plan being proposed by the federal government.

It would give men the ability to take time off work over the first two years of their baby’s life, with the leave funded by the federal government, The Australian has reported.

Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth says she’s keen to begin talks about how the needs of Australian families can best be met.

“Society has changed. A lot more men do want to play a role. And a lot of men do say they want to be the primary caregiver for some period of time.”

The current parental leave system gives the primary caregiver, which is generally mums, 18 weeks of leave paid based on the minimum wage. Men are entitled to two weeks of partner pay.

Executive director of The Parenthood, Georgie Dent, says while the commitment to a more flexible parental leave scheme is welcome, parents should ideally have access to an extra 20 weeks of paid parental leave (a total of 40), that can be shared as they need.

“For context, in the OECD, the average length of paid leave that’s available for families is 50 weeks,” Georgie told Yahoo Finance.

“Australia has got a lot of ground to make up in terms of offering and encouraging fathers to share the care and take extended parental leave,” she said.

  • It sounds good, but as someone pointed out today, many businesses just can’t afford this. Honestly, I can’t see all dads wanting it

  • This seems like a step in the right direction, but agree there is still more that can be done to make access to parental leave available for all that might want to use the leave

  • Would have been good for both kids.
With your first it’s always a challenging and scary time as you don’t really know what you’re doing so to have that extra support for the first few months would have been great!

  • We would certainly have used this if it had existed.

  • Finally! I wish they had this when my husband was working. But hang on if women only get 18 weeks why do men get 20? Or has maternity leave also changed to 20 weeks now?

  • Finally some
Parenting equality. Dads are just as capable as mums and it’s great to see their parenting options being recognised.

  • I think dads deserve some time off also as it’s important for their bonding and mental health to be with the baby and their partner.
