Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron has revealed that her eldest child is transgender.

According to the actress, Jackson, 7, was born a boy but told Theron four years ago that she was actually a girl, shares Daily mail.

“Yes, I thought she was a boy, too,” the 43-year-old admitted in a recent interview. “Until she looked at me when she was three-years-old and said, ‘I am not a boy!’”

“So there you go! I have two beautiful daughters who, just like any parent, I want to protect and I want to see thrive,” the actress said.

“They were born who they are and exactly where in the world both of them get to find themselves as they grow up, and who they want to be, is not for me to decide.”

“My job as a parent is to celebrate them and to love them and to make sure that they have everything they need in order to be what they want to be, and I will do everything in my power for my kids to have that right and to be protected within that.”

She laughs: ‘You can blame my mum for the fact I don’t know any better! You know, I grew up in a country where people lived with half-truths and lies and whispers and nobody said anything outright, and I was raised very specifically not to be like that.

‘I was taught by my mum that you have to speak up; you have to be able to know that, when this life is over, you’ll have lived the truth you’re comfortable with, and that nothing negative can come from that.’

Charlize adopted Jackson in 2012 and her other daughter, August, was adopted three years later.

  • I don’t think it’s up to any of us to judge because we aren’t in her situation and most of us don’t have to deal with that in a lifetime. I’m sure she’s doing the best that she can and I’m sure that her child has plenty of support and help if they need it to deal with this

  • a final decision yes it is way to early but if the child wants to live as the opposite gender then let them, chances are it will be a phase and if not then good too

  • Not sure how I feel about this. Don’t exactly think it should be Shared to the world.

  • Sounds like a very supportive parent!

    • She is indeed a supportive sounding parent and exactly what a child needs to navigate through life.

  • I’m not sure she should be invading her child’s privacy by telling everyone. Shouldn’t they get to chose that when they’re older?

  • a tough thing for them to work through

  • I have no PC words to describe this so I will stay silent

  • Did Charlize ask the boy why he thought that way? I know a lad who is really handsome and has dark very curly hair. He was harrassed and told he looked like a girl because of his hair and beautiful clear skin.

  • She sounds like a very reasonable mum which is open to her daughter being transgender.

  • Oh mum goodness, way too young!! When I was that age, I would of liked to be a boy at some stage, what child wouldn’t want to know what it’s like being the opposite gender? but I’m perfectly happy with who I am! Changing a child’s gender is not right!
