WIN 1 of 20 copies of the novel We That Are Left by Lisa Bigelow, thanks to Allen & Unwin.

A moving debut novel about love and war, and the terrifyingly thin line between happiness and tragedy.

Melbourne, 1941. Headstrong young Mae meets and falls head over heels in love with Harry Parker, a dashing naval engineer. After a whirlwind courtship they marry and Mae is heavily pregnant when she hears that Harry has just received his dream posting to HMAS Sydney. Just after Mae becomes a mother, she learns Harry’s ship is missing.

Meanwhile, Grace Fowler is battling prejudice to become a reporter on the afternoon daily newspaper, The Tribune, while waiting for word on whether her journalist boyfriend Phil Taylor, captured during the fall of Singapore, is still alive.

Surrounded by their friends and families, Mae and Grace struggle to keep hope alive in the face of hardship and despair. Then Mae’s neighbour and Grace’s boss Sam Barton tells Mae about a rumour that the Japanese have towed the damaged ship to Singapore and taken the crew prisoner. Mae’s life is changed forever as she focuses her efforts on willing her husband home.

  • The hardest thing I’ve had to wait for is my first born child. I was in labour seems like forever and not progressing, she was facing front and was face first (she wanted a look see first) ended up an emergency c section in a country hospital and when I came out of anaesthetic i wanted to see my daughter and they wouldnt let me get up and they wouldnt bring her to me until I kicked up that much if a storm they gave in. And I had about 9 months earlier passed my nursing exams after doing my training there . I now have 3 kids and 6 grandkids and everyone of them was a miracle.

  • I had to wait 5 years for the specialist to tell me that my breast cancer probably would not come back and then it was at 10 years he said you probably will be OK – very hard.

  • I was 34 when I met my husband. I saw those around me meeting people, getting married, building lives and I waited…and waited…and waited. the hardest part is waiting for something you think might not even happen.

  • The very hardest thing I have ever had to wait for is the ‘all clear’ for my husband after 35 radiation treatments and 3 chemo treatments. Hardest family time ever

  • Christmas Day, the fun the joy. The smiles on the faces of my girl and boys. The food coma, the laughs the general fun and after it all a snooze in the sun.

  • The birth of my first child as it seemed that the event would never happen.

  • The hardest thing I’ve had to wait for was the birth of my son. After my 18 week scan I was told my beautiful son had a rare condition and there was an high risk of losing him. At 24 years old, my son is truly a gift.

  • Four kids, and in total 22 school years,
    Concludes this year- Woohoo! Cheers!

  • Waiting for exam results is no fun. The to-ing and fro-ing of yes, of course I passed and no way did I pass. Wondering if you just spent a whole year in a futile exercise.

  • My daughter was having lots of dizzy spells, almost fainting. CT scans and others ordered, paced and feared during the wait for the results, thankfully they were all clear.

  • Getting pregnant and having my kids…

  • My husband, living on opposite sides of the country for 18 months and not having the money to go visit him it was challenge for our relationship and our hearts missing one another. Nothing beats that feeling the day he returned back home!

  • The birth of my babies. Tough pregnancies, and then both were overdue. For the second I could not even walk at the end (due to siatica). so I wanted them out!!

  • Waiting to find out if my husbands cancer had spread to his lymph nodes. Nothing will compare ever

  • the birth of my children… 9 months of waiting is a heck of a long time….

  • The news that my husband was in remission from cancer, was a hard year of treatment, but when the news came it was worth it

  • When I broke my ankle, it wasn’t put back together properly, I had to wait 12 months for another operation, which also didn’t work, finally after 8 operations I have had it fused, but it really affected me

  • Knowing I wanted him and that the time just wasn’t right….8 years later we got together…15 years later a happy family. He was so woth the wait.

  • My beautiful little boy. I was over-due and it was agony waiting out the hour/days for his arrival. I was very uncomfortable and could hardly move. I just wanted to see his little face and know he was healthy.

  • That 12 week mark after suffering multiple miscarriages.
