Trying to get the perfect snap of your child isn’t the easiest – first you have to wrangle them to stay still, and then you want their gorgeous smile to light up the camera.

But what you usually get is a forced grin that looks more like they’re in pain rather than having a happy snap taken. Enter dad Adam Perry, who has the easiest trick to getting kids to smile for the camera in a natural and truly joyous way. And it involves just one word. Poop.

Adam shared his genius tip on Twitter, and it was applauded by parents everywhere. Who knew that the secret to a beautiful photo of your child involved swapping out the word ‘cheeeese’ for ‘poop’?

Apparently, Adam knew.

The children’s book author said he and his wife stumbled upon the trick a while ago, and it still works every time.

And there are plenty of parents who have since used the trick to get picture perfect smiling pics of their kids.

  • Ah this might be something that would work more with boys then with girls but its a brilliant idea. I have a very fake photo smile and hate having my photo taken as i know i always look awful. My partner caught a great photo of me when he said “take your top off”… I cracked up laughing

  • I wish that school photo photographers would try to make the kids smile naturally. I am sick of paying for the school photo bundles every year, just to have them delivered to find an awkward fake smile from my son, who has the cheekiest grin on any other day. I get that they are busy trying to do photos of the entire school of children, but this is their job, to take these photos as memories of our kids school years. I’m all up for them saying ‘Poop’ if that gets a natural grin.

    • You don’t have to pay for the school photo’s every year ! Why don’t you take some of your kids in uniform yourself ?

  • Truth. Poop works wonders. Fart and undies works great too. Also telling them they aren’t allowed to laugh and need to give me their most serious face ever…always ends in a laugh

  • Not sure what word I would use, but shouting out ‘poop’ in public may be embarrassing!
