A mum has shared the magical song that has been getting her baby to sleep for the past eight months, with thousands of other mums revealing it’s also worked for them. And you’ll never guess the tune!

When our babies are unsettled and impossible to get to sleep, we’ll try almost any Old Wives’ Tale to soothe them. But this trick is super simple – no rocking, no gimmicks – just a gentle song that seems to somehow lull babies into the Land of Nod.

Mum Leah shared the tip on social media eight months ago, and has recently posted an update, saying the song still settles her baby, who is now one, to sleep.

“The song is Misty Mountain from The Hobbit”, she explained. “And it works. The last time I shared this it blew up and you wouldn’t believe the comments about how well it worked for so many parents. There’s not much I love more than a parenting win like this.”

Her recent post has attracted more than two thousand comments, many from parents who say the song, which features low tones and deep notes, has worked for their babies as well.

“We were on the 90th minute of trying to have the baby go to sleep, I came across this post – thought I’d try it, the instant the song started she went quiet. After five loops she was asleep. I meeeaaan whattttt,” wrote one mum.

While another explained the reasons behind the song’s calming effect.

“There is a perfectly scientific reason as to why this is calming. The deep and low tones and vibrations “tells” the nuerosystem to relax, and is slowing down the heartbeat and breathing similar to when we are sleeping. It works on adults too. Other tones can work as well, as long as the beat is steady and below 80-60 pr minute.”

If you want to try it out with your little one (or yourself) here’s a three hour loop of the song. You’re welcome!

  • This is hilarious!! I know what I will be falling asleep to for the next couple of months. At this stage I may as well put a sail on the pram because the pirate vibes in this song as strong. 30 seconds in and I now have a snooring baby in my arms!

  • There was a mum on this site in the forum section asking how she could get her 22month baby to sleep the other day. I do hope she reads this post, Leah, as it sounded like she was at her wits end. Although I no longer need this trick I can easily see how it would work. I am feeling sleepy writing this. Ha, ha

  • My son and his wife would always play AC/DC for their girls and I thought it would never work. It did work on them though. Maybe because they have loud neighbours and it got the girls used to loud music and they could sleep through it. Whatever works for our babies will make us happy that’s for sure.

  • Great stuff it worked ! I was given a CD with Irish / Celtic lullabies and this was very effective as well.
I agree that deep and low tones and vibrations are relaxing and are slowing down the heartbeat and breathing and impacts the neuro system. In a way this is where the Safe and Sound and Soundsory programs play into as well impacting the vestibular system

  • If it works it works. All kids are different. I tried everything as well with my child and in the end she just needed to know I was right next to her and that she was not alone. Everyone’s experience is different and it is lovely that she showed what worked for her to help other mums try this.

  • That’s so interesting! I imagine it’s got something to do with the particular tones used in the song and them being soothing. To think women for hundreds of years have been settling their children to sleep with singing and it is still something that is very effective and works. Sometimes the old ways are best!

  • Would not have worked on my kids lol they went to sleep by listening to Queen, AC/DC, Meatloaf and the like lol Even at a very young age my boys showed excellent taste in music LOL With the oldest, I had a tape player playing with AC/DC when I left the room for about 3 minutes and when I came back he was asleep, this was when he was about 3 months old. The youngest liked Queen right from birth but they both liked some others.

  • Haha i wish I’d read this when my kids were younger. I definitely would have given it a go. Maybe I’ll keep it in mind to try with the grand babies instead. This seems like a much simpler idea than some of the things people are coming up with lately. 🙂

  • Hahah I tried this and it never worked. My Spotify wrapped is ruined since having a baby, every nap is themed with Max Richter Sleep (Piano Edition) which is magic for our bub, and the bed time song is Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 8 in A Minor by Lars Vogt. I’ve been playing both since he was just 2 weeks old so it triggers sleepy eyes.

  • Thankfully all my kids were good sleepers so I didn’t have to worry about music or anything like that.

  • That’s interesting. I never really used a song.

  • I will absolutely be trying this next time my little guy won’t sleep. The other plus side is my husband is a huge LOTR and Tolkein fan so he won’t get sick of the song on repeat.

  • Amazing, I will try this out with my 11 month old who is recently having a hard time going to sleep at night!

  • I get it. It’s deep and resonating. My kids are too old to try this and really only one of them had sleeping issues.

  • How good. I don’t have babies anymore but will pass it onto other friends who have issues with getting their child to sleep.

  • Mine are too old for this, but it’s the sort of simple idea I’d have been willing to try.

  • That’s so cool! Mine are well past that stage, but great advice for new parents.
