If you’re anything like most mums, as exhausted as we are, some nights it can be frustratingly difficult to fall asleep. Which is why we’re intrigued by the viral, new Sleepy Girl Mocktail – which claims to be a natural sleep aid.

There are so many reasons why we toss and turn, even though we’re desperate for sleep, including racing thoughts (because mums NEVER switch off!). But the latest viral trend taking over TikTok promises to help us get to sleep, with nothing more than sipping a drink.

The Sleepy Girl Mocktail is a mix of tart cherry juice, magnesium supplement and some sort of sparkling water or drink. And there are literally hundreds of videos with women claiming the drink not only helps them get to sleep, but they sleep for longer.

So does the Sleepy Girl Mocktail really work? According to science, maybe.

Let’s take a look at the ingredients. Firstly, tart cherry juice, which most of us probably haven’t had before. There is some research to suggest that drinking it regularly helps overall sleep, and may also help increase sleep quality and quantity, probably because it contains melatonin. Then there’s the magnesium supplement.

According to Postdoctoral research fellow, CQUniversity Australia Charlotte Gupta, magnesium works to promote melatonin, and magnesium supplements have also been shown to help improve sleep. Just remember that the recommended daily maximum of magnesium is 320mg for adult women.

And finally, the last ingredient – some sort of bubbly or carbonated water or drink. There’s no real sleep benefit to adding this, it’s more about the taste. But just remember, the more you drink just before bed, the higher likelihood you’ll need to get up to go to the toilet – thus defeating the purpose of the mocktail!

  • I suspect that the ritual helps more than the ingredients.

  • I’m always a bit sceptic of these sort of claims, but if you try it and it seems to work then that’s great! Would love a full nights restful sleep.
