Incredible footage of a woman’s head steaming as she suffers a menopause-induced hot flash has prompted an outpouring of support for women going through ‘the change’.

Tracey Monique uploaded the now-viral video to TikTok, with the caption, “Hot and hungry. Hot flashes are annoying and rude”. As she sits at a sporting ground enjoying a snack, he head can be seen steaming as she and her friend joke that her ‘flashes are flashing’.

The video has drawn sympathy from women who have been through perimenopause and menopause, and disbelief from others.

One mum commented, “My daughter always thinks I am exaggerating when I get a hot flash! I showed her this and she said she never wants to grow up lol. She is 11.”

Another replied: “I am going through menopause right now and this is perfect visual representation of a hot flash. I have to change my sheets every day and my clothes multiple times a day.”

“I’m currently going through this and I would 1000% rather have my period for the rest of my life compared to menopause symptoms,” commented another woman.

“This should be in the menopausal handbook, so they know what we’re going through!!”

What are hot flashes?

Hot flashes, or flushes, are a totally normal part of menopause. While not everyone gets them, they can make you may feel warm and your skin flushes and sweats. It can also happen at night – these are called night sweats.

It’s still not really known why we get hot flashes during menopause, but it’s thought the lower levels of oestrogen may impact how our bodies regulate temperature.

Did you get hot flashes, or are you going through them right now? Can you relate to this video? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Every woman has to go through this stage – some of us have it easier than others but I have found that when doctors tell you it lasts around 5 years, they really have no idea of how long it may last. I can remember my poor mother at age 80 still having a hot flush – and trying to be blase about it as she didn’t believe it would last over 30 years. My late husband was finally sympathetic when he had to have hormonal treatment for cancer and had all the menopause symptoms.

  • I know exactly how she feels although with me, my hair would look like I’d been in a sauna. I used to sleep on a towel so it was easier to change than have to sleep in a wet bed until morning. I’d go through at least 3 sets of pyjamas a night, even if it was freezing cold. My hubby was wonderful. He’d tell me to put the air-con on as cold as I liked and he just put his electric blanket on. It was a win/win situation.

  • I’ve been lucky, mine haven’t been too bad – but enough to have sympathy for her!

If it is real, why are you perpetuating the cycle and sharing this poor womans face?

  • I hope she’s alright, either she’s very hot, or the air temperature is very cold.

  • Oh my goodness; the poor woman; that is extreme and not pleasant at all. Hot flushes are so very real and unlike any other heat ever experienced. It does indeed feel like you are on fire inside and the sudden extreme heat and the sweat dripping is extremely unpleasant and happens with no control.

  • After a terrible time at puberty and just horrific menstrual cycle I’m really not looking forward to menopause and I’m actually terrified. I’ve had hot flashes before from different things and I know how terrible they make you feel. I salute the women that are going through this right now. I’ll be there soon, I’m sure.

    • Aw bless, that does sound serious ! I have a friend who suffered greatly under her menopausal symptoms and she got Veozah (Fezolinetant) prescribed. The FDA approved this medication for moderate to severe hot flashes in 2023. Veozah is a neurokinin 3 (NK3) receptor agonist that works by binding to and blocking the activities of the NK3 receptor, which helps regulate body temperature in the brain. There is also other non hormonal drugs treatment possible. I would certainly talk to your specialist when it comes to that

  • I can believe it. My hot flushes were incredible and so frequent. It can be horrific.

    • Every bit of sympathy because they really are quite unpleasant and no one can really tell you how they feel until they have been experienced. Thankfully there is more understanding of symptoms and people are happy to talk about their experiences and to show compassion and kindness when they are experienced.

  • Wow, that’s crazy. Poor lady. I am definitely getting the hot flushes and also night sweats which are really not pleasant but I’ve never had steam coming off my head, at least I really don’t think I have anyway and i hope this is something I never have to go through.

    • No I never had steam coming from my head either. I found that eating soy helped with the symptoms. Soy isoflavones may help reduce hot flashes and night sweats that many women have during menopause. In clinical studies, postmenopausal women who eat high amounts of dietary soy protein (20 to 60 g per day) generally have fewer and less intense hot flashes and night sweats than those who eat less soy.

  • Oddly i never suffered with this at all but I am working with a woman at the moment who suffers with this really badly. She is always complaining about how hot it is and she wants the air con ramped up so everyone else freezes. She has mood swings also and can be very crabby

  • I’m 61 yr this week and no more hot flushes, but yes I certainly had them but had no steam coming from my head. A study revealed the importance of estrogens for heat dissipation, which is directly related to the steam emanating from Tracey Monique’s head. “Estrogens affect heat dissipation by regulating cutaneous vasoconstriction and fluid vaporization,” the study explains. Very interesting indeed

  • I feel her pain, the flushes are real. Some days my hot flushes are mild and I just get real hot for about 40 sec then some times they are so hot I just want to shave my head and rip my clothes off just to cool down. Again this only last about 40 sec then I’m cold.
I know my symptoms are mild compared to others.

  • Wow! I haven’t seen that happen. Hot flushes aren’t fun. One time I took my temp as I thought I had one. Nope! No temp. I don’t like night sweats. They interrupt my sleep. I do feel for that lady. I would be happy to have my Period gone forever!
