Hello!

I was the first out of my friends to have a baby which was nice in that everyone was really excited about the impending bundle of joy.

My friends bought me adorable onesies and I fantasized about how I would prance around with my baby who would be a little mini-me, dressed immaculately, lying quietly in my Bugaboo Cameleon (in beige!) and we would be the perfect little pair.

There were so many things that were unrealistic about this. Firstly, it’s really tough being the first in your group to have a baby as no one understands why it takes a lot more time and effort for you to leave your house, and why you constantly smell like vomit. The next unrealistic thing, is the ‘lying quietly’… Maybe in between feeds, burps, screaming and nappy changes! And lastly, do we really need to talk about the choice of colour for the Cameleon?

But the one thing that was really cool about being first was that everyone was excited to attend my baby shower. My best friends organized it for me – girls only, limited games, amazing food and lots of presents… and who doesn’t love presents!

However, without sounding like an unappreciative brat, after having my bub I rarely used any of them. They may have looked adorable but they were just not practical. So I have decided to compile a list of the best baby shower gifts. This will help take the guess work out of present buying for baby shower attendees, and for all those mums-to-be out there, you may want to subtly (or not so subtly) share this list with your friends.

1.    ‘Baby Love’ by Robin Barker – $35.99

The Bible for all things baby… Baby Love is the only book you’ll need to guide you through your baby’s first year.

2.    Love To Swaddle UP Original – $39.95

What better gift for a new Mum, than the gift of sleep! These are the only swaddles on the market that allow babies to sleep in their natural position with their arms up. A must have for any new mum (and dad).

3.    ‘Baby’s First Year – Memories for Life’ by Annabel Karmel – $26.95

This is a great book that makes it easy for you to record every moment of your baby’s first year – from their first words and steps, to their favourite food and toy. You’ll never remember them later so use it now to document everything!

4.    My Baby by Homedics SoundSpa On The Go – $21.95

Soothing sounds for bub, whether you are at home or on the go. A great product for helping baby feel safe and secure.

5.    Sophie the Giraffe Rubber Teether – $34.95

Sophie is one of the only 100% natural rubber teething toys made with food grade paints in the world so it’s safe for your bub and looks adorable. Every child needs a Sophie!

6.    Bellies and Beyond Baby Sleep candle – $25.00

Candles that are perfect for burning before sleep time. Made with sweet pea, neroli and just a hint of lavender, this will put the whole family to sleep!

7. Diono Change ‘N Go Change Wallet – $19.95

Everything you need for convenient nappy changes when you’re out and about!

8.    Spotty Giraffe Breastfeeding Cover – $35.00

These covers are made from 100% cotton, so they allow for plenty of ventilation for your baby and they look great!

9.    Aden & Anais Mum + Bub Hair + Body Wash 355mL – $24.95

Free from all the nasties, this hair and body wash is gentle enough for bub, yet sophisticated enough for Mum. Especially handy if you are travelling and want to limit your luggage!

10. Baby Einstein Baby MacDonald DVD – $29.95

No need to feel guilty when putting this DVD on for your little one! Baby MacDonald introduces bub to all the exciting sights and sounds of life on a farm and may even buy you enough time to sit down for a few minutes, which is priceless with a bub.

11. You & Boo Chevron Hooded Towel – $19.95

An essential item and one often forgotten by new parents is a towel for bub. These ones are made from super soft premium cotton, and I just love the modern chevron designs. Wish they came in my size too!

 12. Tiny Love Butterfly Sunny Stroll Travel Toy – $49.95

An ensemble of fun toys and activities for the pram and infant carriers, it will become every mum’s best friend.

13. Bandana Bibs (3pk) – $36.95

Bibs are a necessary evil, destined to ruin even the cutest looking outfit… well not with these cool bandana bib designs! Catch those dribbles in style.

14. Infantino Squeeze Station – $39.95

I’m all for anything that makes a Mum’s life easier! The Infantino Squeeze Station is a one-stop-unit that presses homemade baby food into easy-to-store and ready-to-serve pouches. Perfect for on-the-go.

15. Play Wow Musical Activity Mirror & Pat Mat – $29.95

This is a great 2-in-1 activity mirror that grows with your baby. When the toy is flat, it’s a mat for tummy time. As baby learns to sit up, you can inflate the back easel for sitting play.

  • Essentials are the best presents you can get. You can never have too many nappies or wipes. Make a hamper out of them and it looks fantastic

  • My niece is having a baby shower in a couple of weeks, and I’ve been giving myself a headache trying to find something useful but different to give her, that wouldn’t require me to take out a second mortgage on the house. This list has given me some great ideas that are practical and affordable.

  • My DIL recently had a baby shower that her GF’s put on for her & they emailed us all a list of needs starting from small ideas & including more expensive things for us to decide what we would buy & email them back to cross it off the list. It was a sensible idea & there was no doubling up on big items.

  • I love being able to give things that I know are necessary but not always thought of, such as a thermometer, icky bear chest rub, paw paw ointment, packaged in a floral of nappies!

  • I’ve never been to a baby shower. Would really rather wait until the baby has been born and it’s all good…but these are all good gifts for after the baby is born.

  • Yes we all get things that we may or may not use, but I hate gift registers as I would rather people spend what they can afford or make something. After having my two children I gave what ever I didn’t use to those who needed it (didn’t sell it) just helped someone else out. Having said that it is nice to have lists on websites for ideas for those that don’t have a clue.

  • I wouldn’t be great at suggesting games because I didn’t want any… I feel like it’s fun for you but boring for everyone else!
