Hobart has become the first capital city in the nation to ban single-use plastics, including takeaway food containers and straws.

City of Hobart councillors voted on Monday night in favour of a by-law to support the ban and impose fines on those that don’t comply.

The by-law targets petroleum-based plastic containers, cups, cup lids, straws, utensils and packets used for sauces and other condiments.

“This will add to the way people perceive Hobart across the world as a city that cares about the environment and its people,” Councillor Bill Harvey, who moved the motion, told The Mercury on Tuesday.

But it won’t come into effect until late this year or early 2020, pending the outcome of a 21-day public consultation to be set in motion by the director of local government.

Under the regulation, Hobart food retailers may be hit with fines of up to $1300 if they offer plastic food containers and utensils.

  • Well done Hobart. I wonder how long before the other states follow suit?

  • Yes I’ve been using the metal straws for a few years hope everyone will be the same!

  • Awesome news, can’t wait until it is nation wide. Terrible seeing the photo’s of the turtles with straws stuck in their noses. There are alternatives already, check out Biome for straws, bring back the cardboard ones we had before the plastic ones were invented, and there are many alternatives to packaging for takeaway too, search the internet, made from plant materials that biodegrade. Even Lego had made Lego plants from this material.

  • I think this is a great initiative but I would love to know how it will be implemented. Do people have to take their own containers to the local Chinese restaurant; how will soy sauce be given with sushi? We can’t even get Coles and Woolies to allow bring your own reusable veggie bags or deli containers!

    • I imagine it will be cardboard boxes for takeaway. But I’ll be interested to see how they package takeaway soups etc.

  • wow go Hobart – I really hope that this becomes the norm around the country – not sure really how achievable it is – given that they normally sell wine in plastic cups at the taste of Tasmania etc but good on them for taking the initiative and starting the ball rolling. I lived in Hobart for a while and it is a beautiful city and if any place needs to protect it’s environment then Tassie should be

  • I’m all for this, one hundred per cent! They need to ban balloons too. All plastic is so detrimental to our wildlife and environment

    • I agree, nothing worse than balloons , they should be banned from being let off into the air at memorials too, so toxic to marine life, I once helped clean up a beach and my son kept asking what the squashed up rubber things were and they were balloons, if interested the Melbourne Zoo has a campaign called blow bubbles not balloons.
