Hello!

Gastro has hit our family I think from kindy. Any ideas on what to feed a 5 yr old when vomiting ceases?

  • Home made chicken soup. You can blend it up to avoid lumps if you like to make it easier to eat

  • The last time I had a gastro myself I couldn’t eat or drink. Every sip of water made me gag and came out. After hours of vomiting I was trembling because I had nothing left in my body. The first thing I then carefully took was a weak camomile tea with half a tea spoon of raw honey. Once you’re holding something in to drink you may try something light to eat.

  • Do not drink citrus juices or milk. Increase fluids as tolerated. When you can tolerate clear liquids for several hours without vomiting and if you’re hungry, try eating small amounts of bland foods. Try foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce, dry toast, soda crackers (these foods are called BRAT diet). The BRAT diet is a bland food diet recommended for adults and children. … That’s because the foods are considered “binding” foods — low-fiber, bland, starchy foods. The foods help replace nutrients your body needs and has lost due to vomiting and diarrhea. Bananas, for example, are high in the vitamin potassium.

  • Rice and rice water. Boil the rice in a pan with a carrot not in ricecooker as you want to keep the liquid. Let him drink the liquid and have rice. Rice crackers is also good if he likes them. Also probiotics in chocballs or yakult will help the good bacteria in his tummy. Don’t forget water or electrolytes for the fluids. ;) good luck

  • Hydrolite is your best bet

  • We just recently all had gastro. We fed our 11 month old puréed apple and bread.
Try to stick to bread or plain pasta.

  • I think grated apple and dry biscuits – even toast

  • We had gastro a few months back and my daughter wouldn’t eat for days! Doc said as long as she is drinking it’s fine and then just start her on plain (not rich) foods like Vegemite toast or crackers. Gastro is no fun :(

  • Thanks for all the replays ,very helpful

  • Home made chicken soup. Yum and so good. When my kids are in recovery mode, I’m usually that happy to see them improving, I let them have whatever they feel like. Only for a short time, I’m just glad they’re getting better, will worry about healthy eating later on

  • High starch foods are best for anyone recovering from gastro. Potatoes, bread/toast no butter, dry biscuits. Keep up the hydralite also. I suffer from gastro every year! My immune system is shocking

  • Interesting comments read, I would ask the GP for sure as well.

  • Err on the side of caution. When vomiting stops for at least a few hour period. Test the waters with a slice of toast and little bit of vegemite. This helps restore vitamins and helps dry up any excess liquid left in their tummy. good luck

  • Great advice thank you !

  • I usually feed my children dry toast, dry crackers or soups are a good one, As for the gastro side of things there is also gastrolyte which will replaceall the electrolytes and rehydrate your child. These are made specially for people that becamedehydrated due to vomiting all the time

  • Lucosade. Dry crackers dry toast ice chips

  • yes hope it is better. We went through this recently and all got it. SOOOO much laundry! we started on toast and lemonade. When you start eating. a day or two, and you feel better and have energy again

  • Small, plain and regular meals is always best when recovering from any illness. Also keep up the fluids – small and regular amounts too.

  • Thank you Moms ,finally has stopped vomiting ,light meal ,bit at a time is what I did in the end .

  • Dry toast and black tea for adults and water and tots for children
