Hello!

I’m due to start my bowel prep for my first colonoscopy. Any hints & tips? Was the actual procedure painful? Did you have full bowel control on discharge from hospital? Worried I’ll soil myself on the way home.

  • I have had a couple of them the procedure is find its the medication they give you to take beforehand is the worst haha

  • My husband has one every three months. He says the procedure isn’t painful. He has full bowel control on release – the only after effect is that he usually sleeps for a few hours afterwards.

  • My husband had had it done a couple of times and has never experienced any problems afterwards.

  • i have had it done and due for a review, i did throw up some of the bowel prep because i drunk it too fast, its not great to be honest. I had full control when i left the hospital. Best of luck!

  • My Hubby had it done last year due to having issues within the family who all needed to have some of their colon removed… They last meal that he was allowed to eat i feed him poached eggs… Just follow the instructions given to you before hand… When my hubby was in the clinic waiting to get it done he saw a few people sent home due to them not following the correct diet in the hours beforehand.., He had no awful side effects afterwards other than wanting to stop at mc donalds on the way home due to been hungry… Good luck

  • yes had one years ago, notbest thing to have done, more embarrasing than painful, and afterwards went to toilet and home no problem. If you are worried take a saniary pad just in case but feel sure you won’t need it. All the best and try not to worry, remember theperson performing colooscopy has dne many and you could talk to them before hand about your concerns. I find sharing is reassuring take care and treat yourself to something delicious or a treat is my advce

  • Chill the liquid you need to drink, it helps make it more bearable! You can also have chicken noodle soup with the noodles drained from it & suck on barley sugar lollies take the edge off feeling hungry. Good luck!

  • drink lots of water/electrolytes, not painful and you should be fine on the way home

  • My husband has these regularly and has no problem with bowel control afterwards.

  • My husband had a colonoscopy a month ago. He didn’t feel any pain during or after the procedure. You will not be able to drive yourself home afterwards because of any lingering effects of the anesthetic.

  • I’ve had a colonosopy (Twice). The procedure itself was completely painless as it was done under general anaesthetic. As for afterwards – while I did still have ‘control’ over bowels, you still have the effects of the laxatives in your system – so i do reccomend wearing a panty liner or similar, because sometimes farts (God forbid any woman for wanting to own up to this) also come with some minor soiling – which you dont always notice at the time.

  • Yes ive had multiple colonoscopys and endoscopys. The prep for me was better than i expected. Id heard a lot of bad things and people telling me to be prepared, its awful. It wasnt for me. The procedure itself is painless and you wont remember it. After is fine. Once youve done the prep, all returns to normal very quickly. Ive found the nurses know how anxious and fearful people can get so they are understanding and supportive.

  • It is not painful and you don’t remember a thing it’s more embarrassing than anything but the Drs and nurses are lovely good luck

  • Don’t worry, you will be fine. People I know of had it done and they didn’t have any issues, they were all having had the usual fear, but that’s just normal the way we think. Good luck, and you’ll be OK :)

  • My partner has had a colonoscopy and endoscopy before and had no issues or embarrassment. He was knocked out for it tho so needed someone to drive him there and home again afterwards. Good luck with yours

  • Yes I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy on the same day. I had the same fears but didn’t need to. The loose movements stopped the morning of the procedure and all was straight back to normal. It also didn’t hurt :-)
