Hello!

I have an 11 month old who favours her left hand to hold things. Our whole family are right handed. Is there anyway that we can sway her to use her right hand or is she just going to be left handed? And to mums with left handed bubs, does it come with any challenges as they get older? She is bub no 3. Thanks

  • I think it’s too early to say.
Some people refer to the preferred hand as the “dominant hand” or use the term “hand dominance”. A hand preference usually starts to develop between the ages of 2 to 4, however it is common at this stage for children to swap hands. Between the ages of 4 to 6 years a clear hand preference is usually established.
My 6 year old still uses both hands.

  • Yes, babies are usually born “handed”. Don’t try to sway her, it’ll cause my problems. I.have a leftie and it hasn’t caused any problems.

  • My son is left handed as are my nephew and brother, and my Dad and Grandad were. Please don’t try to change them. There is a direct link with the brain and learning, and letting them use their preferred hand will help them in so many ways, whereas discouraging and trying to get them to write with their non-preferred hand can affect their learning.

  • I think so…. my second is ambidextrous.. writes right hand and left handed with sports.

  • I am left handed and I do not have any problems and why would you want to sway her to right handed?
my oldest is left handed and I am pretty sure my youngest might be also. if not i intend to strap their right hand behind their back and force them to use their left lol

  • yes it is just how she is and there is nothing wrong with it. how could you even consider trying to “sway her to use the right”????
my grandfather was swayed to use his right hand, you know how? he was beaten every time he used his left! if he even picked up a pencil with his left hand he was smacked across the hand with a large wooden ruler. he was left with scars on his knuckles from it.
there is nothing wrong with left handed! there is actually evidence that suggests left handed people have higher cognitive abilities. AKA smarter.

  • i think that they will just gravitate to one side or the other. don’t know if it is born that way vs developmental

  • interesting question, I assume some people are beft destined to be left handed and some right. Its a bit like babies are born with blue eyes but some will be brown etc as they grow

  • No idea but I hope other mums can give you the answers you need.

  • My eldest is left handed. I don’t think at all it is a bad thing, but it has made it that little bit harder to teach her to write correctly etc…. but overall she can still do it so who cares.

  • They are born without a preference. They just pick things up with whichever hand they feel like at that moment and seem to be just as good/bad with both!

  • my partner mother and father is both left handed and he is right handed. My daughter uses her left hand constantly! Both me and my partner are right handed

  • I’ve heard that they don’t have a prefers side until about 3 years old. They us allay go between the two when ever they feel like it

  • Lefties are special people! you are lucky to have one if it is the case (babies are born ambidextrous!)

  • there are some good comments here

  • I don’t think it matters if she is left handed or right handed.

  • i dont think it be a problem if shes a left hander

  • In relation to comments regarding not changing the child’s preference, I agree. I was born left handed & through early schooling was forced to change to the use of my right hand. I can clearly remember the distress it caused. The only benefit was, I am now ambidextrous. I do also believe that left handed persons are more creative. While I did very well in school, I still chose to turn down an arts law placement, to open a dance school. I have always been more comfortable within the creative fields & decades later I’m still doing what I love :0) I also read once, it can result negatively on the wiring of the brain if interfered with. I am uncertain if this was substantiated but I am in the opinion, ‘don’t try to fix what isn’t broken.’ Let your little one decide & good luck!!

  • I asked the same question at my last Child Health Nurse visit. I was told that children do not work this out until up to 3 years of age????

  • Don’t worry bub will work out which hand she wants to use. Left handed people usually learn how to use both left and right hands to do things. Im a lefty. I use my left to write and my right for most other tasks. I found playing catch with a ball and getting her to use both hands then catch in one hand then the other. This will help hand eye co-ordination for both sides. Im pretty sure my 5 month old girl is going to be a lefty too. There is no problem with being left handed. She will probably be very creative.
