Hello!

After years of being a nail biter I am wanting to now grow my nails but they break off & are so brittle. Any suggestions to combat this problem?

  • Might be something lacking in your diet. Have you tried any nail care products?

  • Im using beef colagen powder supplements

  • Fellow nail, biter here. Mine split and tear though. There are supplements you can get from the chemist. Also increase your calcium intake and healthy oils, such as olive oil, avocado, nuts etc

  • Have you got a good diet?

  • Have you tried a herbal supplement – there’s one for skin hair and nails I think its blackmores

  • To make brittle nails may be difficult. I would first try to identify the main cause of the problem (e.g. underlying disease, excessive use of nail polishes or nail procedures, etc.). Then I would try to deal with the problem. Sometimes brittle nails just mean that you lack do not have enough vitamins (mainly vitamin D, B or E) or other substances (proteins, zinc). In such case you just need to inrease the intake of those minerals (for instance by eating lean meat or leafy vegetables). If the problem is dehydration, just try to drink more water. Otherwise you may also try Jojoba oil and alpha-proxy acid.

If the problem persists you really should see your doctor and show him your nails and get a proper medical examination and treatment recommended by your physician.

    Hope this helps a bit

  • there are nail polishes that are clear and they help to strengthen nails. also you could try rubbing rose hip oil onto your nails

  • there is a nail polish that can help, also calcium supplement might help

  • You should be able to get a good hair, skin, nail supplement from the pharmacy or health food stores. I think adding nuts into your diet is supposed to help too.

  • i use sally hansen nail stuff. it works really well.

  • there are some good comments here

  • I have been a nail bitter all my life until late last year when I decided to try Sally Hansons Nail growth. You paint it on your nails for a few days then remove it and reapply. It has made my nails a little stronger which then makes it harder to chew and allows them to grow. I still can only have them a certain length but long enough so they look good painted or unpainted and can see white tips

  • you could paint them to give them some extra strength.

  • Health food stores have tablets that you can take , ive used them before it works well

  • the chemist has polish that you can put onto your nails so you wont want to bit as it tastes discusting

  • Nail hardners are good, Revitanail is the one I use and love. Also try a cutical oil. Rub it into your cutical each day. This helps the cutical look nice but it also promotes healthy nails as that is where you’re nails grow from. If you don’t want to buy an oil specific for cuticals you could use any facial oil, baby oil or even something like paw paw. Anything that is going to provide lots of hydration quickly.

  • Talk with your chemist and they will be able to give you something to use

  • I would be very careful with nail strengtheners or hardeners as most require several coats and the nail can be more prone to infection and tends to be more of a band aid solution. If they are brittle I would suggest a really good cuticle oil like solar oil or OPI has one called adrenoplex. It will treat the problem where it starts, in the live nail bed and keep them hydrated and less likely to break. also massaging around the cuticle area stimulates the circulation and your nails will grow faster

  • This could be a sign of some mineral deficiency. Zinc for starters.

  • the sally hansen nail polish that does it is meant to be good
